SUSPENSION:FRONT
KIA MOTORS CORPORATION (KMC) IS RECALLING 36,538 MODEL YEAR 2001-2004 OPTIMA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE STATES DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUBFRAME. OVER TIME, SUCH SUBFRAME CORROSION NEAR THE CONNECTION TO THE LOWER CONTROL ARM CAN LEAD TO WHEEL MISALIGNMENT AND/OR OTHER NOTICEABLE STRESS IN STEERING, OR ACCELERATED ABNORMAL TIRE WEAR.
Fix: KMC WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 15, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA'S CONSUMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

Your car's passenger side sub-frame has rusted through completely, causing your tire and suspension to break free and making your vehicle unsafe to drive. Kia issued a recall for this exact problem, but your state (Kentucky) wasn't included even though surrounding states were. You'll need the rusted sub-frame inspected, reinforced or replaced, and the suspension components reinstalled and checked.

While driving at just 20 mph, your car suddenly began to swerve uncontrollably and went into a ditch. No injuries occurred, but the vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired to determine what caused the loss of control. A suspension inspection and alignment check will likely be needed to identify and fix the underlying cause.

Your car's wheels are out of alignment, and a mechanic discovered that the subframe is cracked. This is the same issue covered under a Kia recall (campaign 09V183000), but when you contacted the dealer, they said the recall repair had already been completed — however, your vehicle was never actually repaired. The subframe crack needs to be welded or replaced to restore proper suspension alignment and vehicle safety.

MY WIFE NOTICED THE CAR PULLING TO THE RIGHT AND CALLED HER BROTHER. HE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE THAT EVENING 12/30/2013. HE DROVE THE CAR PULLING ONTO A HIGHWAY, THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE -- NEITHER FORWARD NOR REVERSE. HE PUSHED THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND THE FRONT AXLE DROPPED OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION. IT WAS TOWED AND THE GARAGE NOTIFIED US THAT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME HAD CORRODED. ONLINE RESEARCH REVEALS NHTSA RECALLED KIA OPTIMA (2001-2004 MODEL YEARS) ON MAY 27, 2009. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ON 12/31/13 WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID THE RECALL DID NOT APPLY TO OUR VEHICLE. THE KMC WAS CONTACTED ON 1/2/14. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL WAS BASED ON "SALT USAGE OF 20 STATES AND DC." THIS INTERPRETATION OF THE NHTSA RECALL ID # 84125 NEEDS DIRECT CLARIFICATION FROM THE NHTSA. THE ORIGINAL RECALL LETTER STATES: "KMC IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2001 - 2004 OPTIMA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY "SOLD IN OR" CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF (20 + THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA)." SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN INDIANA MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE INITIAL RECALL. REGARDLESS, THE SAFETY ISSUE OF THE VEHICLE SHOULD WARRANT A NOTIFICATION TO ALL OWNERS OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS FOR THIS VEHICLE. THIS MECHANICAL ISSUE COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A CATASTROPHIC EVENT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO COMPLETE A RIGHT TURN, THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE AXLE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO DISCOVERED THAT THE AXLE HAD BECOME SEPARATED DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION OF THE SUB FRAME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 09V183000 (SUSPENSION). THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 114,000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V183000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE VEHICLE HAD TO RECEIVE A WHEEL ALIGNMENT IN CONJUNCTION TO THE RECALL REPAIR. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WOULD NOT BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT SERVICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT THERE WAS NO RESOLUTION. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE CONSUMERS EXPENSE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 132,818. UPDATED 8/7/09 *CN UPDATED 08/11/09.*JB
