MY JEEP HAD A PISTON / CONNECTING ROD BREAK THROUGH BOTTOM OF MY ENGINE BLOCK MY JEEP WAS MAINTENANCED AND I'M SECOND OWNER AND IT ONLY HAS 74,000MI SO GO INTO NOW I'M PAYING ON VEHICLE AND NO WAY GET WORK, PLUG IN MY CODE READER AND FIND CODE OF DEATH LIKE REALLY. ANY WAY WAS INDICATED THAT MY NUMBER 4 CYLENDER HAD MISS FIRE LEADING TO STUCK IN A VERY EXPENSIVE PAPER WEIGHT. I WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ROUTE 209
ENGINE FAILURE. WHILE TRAVELING AT 75MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THREW A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART IT. THE VEHICLE DID NOT IMMEDIATELY RESTART, BUT DID SO ON THE SECOND TRY. I DROVE AWAY AND APPROXIMATELY A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO KNOCK AND MAKE BANGING NOISES, I PULLED OVER ONCE AGAIN AND CALLED A TOW TUCK. VEHICLE WAS LATER DIAGNOSED WITH FAILED ROD BEARINGS AND REQUIRED A FULL REBUILD. VEHICLE HAD 125K MILES AT THE TIME OF FAILURE.
REPEATED FAILURE OF RADIATOR AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING. ANNUAL REPLACEMENT PLUS THE HEATER CORE DETERIORATION DUE TO PH LEVELS. BAD DESIGN. SAFETY ISSUE AS A FAILED RADIATOR BLOWS UP STEAM AND BLOCKS VIEW IN MOTION IN UNSAFE.
DRIVNING ON INTERSTATE IN OHIO AFTER STOP AT SERVICE PLAZA AND JUST GOT OFF RAMP PULLING ONTO INTERSTATE AND OIL LIGHT POPPED UP AND AT SAME TIME ENGINE MADE A NOISE. IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF ROAD. TURNED OFF JEEP, CALLED AAA. THEY TOWED ME. I'M TOLD IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. I HAVE RECORDS OF GOOD CARE OF THIS VEHICLE. IT ONLY HAD 56,500 MILES. I'M FINDING OUT OTHERS ONLINE OTHERS WENT THROUGH SAME. THE GARAGE TELLS ME THAT JEEP KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM AND PUT A NEW UPGRADE TO ENGINES. THESE ENGINES SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. NOW I'M FACING THOUSANDS FOR A NEW ENGINE AND I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE. I HAVE CONTACTED JEEP AND WAITING FOR A RESPONSE.
I BOUGHT MY JEEP WITH 67,000 MILES, WITHIN A YEAR BEFORE REACHING 100,000 MILES IT WAS ONLY AT ABOUT 99,000MILES WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND APPARENTLY THE ENGINE WASN'T LUBRICATING CORRECTLY AND A BEARING IN THE ENGINE SHATTERED. EVEN THOUGH I CHANGE MY OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES WITH HIGH MILEAGE BECAUSE MY SPOUSE WORKS ON CARS HE IS ALWAYS MAKING SURE. AFTER LOOKING INTO THIS FURTHER THIS ENGINE IS KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE JEEP COMMUNITY TO FAIL BEFORE REACHING 100,000 MILES YET JEEP STILL HAS NOT USED AN EXTENSION FOR THE ENGINE. I SPENT ALMOST 20,000 DOLLARS ON THIS VEHICLE ONE YEAR AGO AND NOW I'M DRIVING AROUND WITH AN ENGINE THAT WILL FAIL SOON BECAUSE I HAVE TO GET TO WORK SOMEHOW AND THE WARRENTY ON THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY A FIVE YEAR 100,000 MILES WARRENTY SO IT DOESN'T COVER IT. I THINK JEEP SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR SELLING PEOPLE THESE ENGINES KNOWING THEY WILL FAIL BEFORE 100,000 MILES AND THAT THEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE AND EXTEND THE ORIGINAL WARRANTIES TO 10 YR 150,000 MILES FOR PEOPLE WHO EXPIERIENCE THIS KIND OF ENGINE FAILURE AND NOW HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW ENGINE OUT OF POCKET. I NEED SOMEONE TO CONTACT ME REGARDING THIS ISSUE I WILL NOT SIT BACK AND REMAIN SILENT UNTIL IT IS RESOLVED. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER LIVING ON LIMITED INCOME AND HAVE TO TAKE FROM MY SAVINGS TO COVER AN ENTIRE NEW ENGINE. FOR A CAR I BOUGHT 1 YEAR AGO AND DIDN'T EVEN GO 100,000 MILES BEFORE EXPLODING. AND I DIDN'T EVEN PUT THE MOST MILES ON IT. I'VE ONLY GONE ABOUT 40,000 MILES. SO IN REALITY THIS WAS MOST LIKELY AN ISSUE BEFORE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE.
DRIVING HOME FRIDAY NIGHT ENGINE STARTED HARD KNOCKING AND HAD CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. THROWN ROD. CALLED LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND CORRESPONDED WITH MOTHER SHIP JEEP - TOLD ME TO POUND SAND. MENTIONED SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEING A CANADIAN CAR AND NO WARRANTY - HOW WOULD I KNOW THAT?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE TRAVELING BETWEEN 55-65 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHOOK UNCONTROLLABLY. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED BEFORE OR AFTER THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO I.G. BURTON CHEVROLET OF MILFORD (793 BAY RD, MILFORD, DE) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STABILIZER FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 84,000.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION CAUSED ENGINE TO FAIL, HAD 4000 MILES TO NEXT OIL CHANGE AND ONLY HAD 1/2 QUART OF OIL REMAINING. NO SMOKE OR OIL ON GROUND WERE DETECTED.
1. LAST YEAR I HAD TO REPLACE MY ENGINE BECAUSE CHRYSLER SAID IT RAN LOW ON OIL WHICH CAUSED ENGINE DAMAGE. I HAD 11 OIL CHANGES AND PROOF OF SERVICE FROM OIL CHANGE SHOPS THAT ENTIRE YEAR. I PAID THE 8K TO PUT A NEW ENGINE IN TO GET IT OUT OF STEVENS CREEK CHRYSLER JEEP AND DODGE. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE CHRYSLER TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT. I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO BECAUSE I COULD NOT "SERVE" ANYONE AT CHRYSLER CORPORATION PROPERLY. 2. THE NEW ENGINE THAT I BOUGHT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY DID AN OIL COMPRESSION CHECK AND IT LOST ALL OF ITS OIL IN 1000 MILES. MY CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW. CHRYSLER WILL COME BACK AND PROBABLY REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR FREE THIS TIME. 3. WHILE MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP THIS WEEKEND , IT WAS BROKEN INTO. BOTH WINDOWS BROKEN AND SPEAKERS STOLEN. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD PAY FOR THIS AND FIX IT. WHAT I WANT IS NOT A NEW ENGINE. I WANT MY MONEY BACK FOR THE ENTIRE JEEP SINCE THEY SOLD ME A CAR THAT HAS HAD TWO BLOWN ENGINES NOW AND I HAVE ALL THE RECIEPTS TO PROVE THE FIRST TIME I WAS NOT AT FAULT. I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE CHRYSLER TO SMALL CLAIMS. I WANT IT DONE FOR ME. I CANNOT GET TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE AT CHRYSLER IN ORDER TO PUSH THIS FURTHER. I SPOKE TO A FEW LAWYERS AND THEY SAID IT ISNT NECCESARILY A LEMON LAW CASE BUT IT IS MORE OF A DEALERSHIP/CHRYSLER WARRANTY CASE. WHAT CAN I DO? THANK YOU. ENGINE BLEW OUT THE OIL, NO WARNING LIGHTS, ENGINE BLEW A ROD. ENGINE LOCKED UP.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, A CLUNKING SOUND EMITTED FROM THE VEHICLE AND IT STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE OIL LEAKED OUT AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. UPDATED 10/19/16*LJ
ON TWO OCCASIONS, WITHIN A TWO WEEK PERIOD, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AFTER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD BEEN RELEASED. THE MOST SEVERE OCCURRED WHILE PASSING AND OVERTAKING ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES AND THE PARKING BRAKE DID NOTHING TO STOP THE ACCELERATION. DURING THE INTENDED PASSING THE VEHICLE REACHED 70 MPH. THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 85 MPH. EVENTUALLY THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING AND WAS DRIVEN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROADWAY.
THE ENGINE CUNSUMES OIL AT A VERY HIGH RATE! TOLD 1 QUART EVERY 1,000 BY THE DEALERSHIP! IN AUGUST 2013 WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY I HAD A ROD BARING SNAP AND SHOOT METAL CHIPS INTO THE OIL PAN AT 52,000, THE WHOLE ENGINE LOCKED UP AND NEEDED REPLACED. ON MAY 7TH 2016, AGAIN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 56,000 MILES ON THE NEW ENGINE, SAME EXACT THING ROD BARING SNAPPED, METAL HIPS INTO THE OIL PAN, ENGINE LOCKED UP AND NEEDED REPLACE! THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE OIL PAN AND I WAS TOLD THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO NEGLECT ON MY PART! I ALWAYS HAS THE OIL CHANGED BETWEEN 3,000-5,000 MILES.. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS ENGINE HAS NOT BEEN TOTALLY RECALLED!!
WHILE FRWY. DRIVING AT APPROX. 72 MPH / 2600 RPMS AND WITHOUT WARNING OR INDICATION OF MALFUNCTION, WE HEARD A POP, AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER MANEUVERED THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. UPON EXITING THE VEHICLE I NOTICED SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM THE UNDERSIDE AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT. MY FAMILY IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE VEHICLE AND I USED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER TO EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE THAT WAS ENGULFING THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE JEEP. AFTER EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE, I WAS ABLE TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED A LARGE HOLE IN THE LOWER ENGINE BLOCK JUST BEHIND THE OIL PAN ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. ADDITIONALLY, THE METAL HEAT SHIELD THAT SITS JUST TO THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE WAS BENT BACKWARD. IT APPEARS THAT THE ENGINE MALFUNCTIONED AND THREW A BEARING OR OTHER ENGINE PART THROUGH THE OUTER MOTOR CASING RELEASING OIL AND CAUSING THE RESULTANT FIRE AND DAMAGE. HOWEVER, I CAN NOT RULE OUT A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION RESULTING IN ENGINE FAILURE VS. PURE MECHANICAL ENGINE FAILURE. IT HAS BEEN OVER TWO WEEKS SINCE THE INCIDENT AND CHRYSLER HAS JUST INFORMED ME THEY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIRS UNDER THE EXISTING 5 YEAR/50,000 MILE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY THAT HAD NOT EXPIRED AND WAS PROVIDED AS PART OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE AGREEMENT IN JULY 2011. THEIR RESPONSE WAS "WE HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THE INSPECTION REPORT AND MUST INFORM YOU THAT WE ARE NOT LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE INCIDENT WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURING RESPONSIBILITY."
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. JEEP BOUGHT NEW, HAS LESS THAN 25,000 MILES. ENGINE OIL LEVEL WAS 2 QUART LOW, 2400 MILES AFTER OIL AND FILTER CHANGE. NO ENGINE LEAKS OR EXHAUST SMOKE. 3.8 ENGINE. GOOGLE OIL CONSUMPTION 3.8 ENGINE, A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM NOT BEING ADDRESS. *TR
I OWN A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON UNLIMITED WHICH I PURCHASED AS A NEW VEHICLE. IT PRESENTLY HAS OVER 90,000 MILES ON IT. RECENTLY, I NOTICED A TICKING SOUND COMING FROM THE MOTOR - DETECTABLE FROM OUTSIDE THE CAR, BUT NOT NOTICEABLE WHEN DRIVING. A FELLOW AT A CAR WASH MENTIONED THAT HE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH HIS JEEP AND SAID THAT THE ISSUE TURNED OUT TO BE "VALVE LIFTERS" AND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED UNDER THE CAR'S DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY. I TOOK MY CAR TO A DEALER IN FOR A REGULAR OIL CHANGE AND ASKED TO HAVE THE TICKING SOUND CHECKED BY A MECHANIC. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE "TOP END" OF THE MOTOR - AND WOULD HAVE TO BRING IT IN AGAIN FOR A MORE LENGTHY EVALUATION - WHICH I DID. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR SERVICE - TOOK THE VEHICLE IN - AND RENTED A CAR FOR WHAT I EXPECTED TO BE SEVERAL DAYS OF SERVICE. THAT WAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO. SUBSEQUENTLY, I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE REPAIRS TO THE TOP END OF THE ENGINE DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM AND THAT THE ENTIRE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER APPARENTLY ORDERED A "LONG BLOCK" REPLACEMENT ENGINE FROM CHRYSLER, BUT HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS OBTAINING OTHER PARTS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THE REPAIR. THE DEALER ALSO TOLD ME TO CONTACT CHRYSLER'S WARRANTY GUYS ABOUT SEEKING SOME RELIEF FOR THE COST OF THE CAR RENTAL - WHICH I DID, BUT TO NO AVAIL. I SHOULD ADD THAT I HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY ASSURED THAT THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT IS COVERED BY THE CAR'S DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY. HOWEVER, I ALSO CAME ACROSS AN ARTICLE IN "AUTOWEEK" DETAILING PROBLEMS CHRYSLER WAS EXPERIENCING WITH JEEP ENGINES OF MY CAR'S VINTAGE - AND THAT THE ENGINE REPLACEMENTS WERE BEING EXACERBATED BY FAILURES IN CHRYLSER'S PARTS SUPPLY CHAIN. THIS HAD RESULTED IN BOTH NHSTA'S INVOLVEMENT AND TO PAYMENTS TO OTHER OWNERS TO OFFSET THE FINANCIAL BURDEN OF THE ATTENUATED WARRANTY REPAIRS. I'M REPORTING THIS ON THIS BASIS. *TR
I STARTED TO HEAR A KNOCKING NOISE FOR 3-5 SECONDS ON A COLD START. IT DID NOT DO THIS ON ANY SEQUENTIAL STARTS FOR THAT DAY. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WHO CHANGED OIL FILTER AND OIL. STILL MADE SOUND ON RECEIVING VEHICLE. TOOK IN AGAIN AND DEALER REPLACED THE LIFTERS. STILL MADE NOISE UPON RECEIPT. TOOK IN FOR A THIRD TIME, THEY ARE NOW SAYING IT IS A NORMAL NOISE, EVEN THOUGH IT NEVER MADE IT BEFORE. JEEP SPECIALISTS SAY THAT THIS IS A NORMAL NOISE AS WELL. AFTER RESEARCHING ON-LINE, I HAVE FOUND A LARGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION LEADING TO A MALFUNCTIONING CYLINDER HEAD ON THE EXACT MAKE AND MODEL OF MY JEEP ENGINE. THERE HAVE BEEN THOUSANDS REPLACED, BUT FOR SOME REASON THIS WAS NOT EVEN CONSIDERED FOR MY VEHICLE. *TR
I HAVE BEEN TOLD EVERYTIME I HAVE MY OIL CHANGED THAT MY OIL LEVEL IS VERY LOW, I ASKED THE DEALER IF THERE WAS A LEAK AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE 3.8L V6 ENGINES ALL CONSUME OIL AND IT IS NORMAL. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER BEEN TOLD THAT AN ENGINE CONSUMING OVER A QUART OF OIL OR MORE WAS NORMAL ON A CAR ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED A FIRE STARTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT WAS MADE AWARE BY A NEIGHBOR THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CONTACTS HOME AND ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,500.
POTENTIALLY A ROOT CAUSE OF THE RASH OF FIRES IN JEEP WRANGLERS THAT ARE SITTING PARKED: FAILURE OF THE TIPM (TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE). IN DEC 2011, MY DAUGHTER DROVE HER NEW (3000 MILES) 2011 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED TO CHURCH, PARKED IT, TURNED OFF THE KEY, TOOK THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, EXITED THE VEHICLE AND LOCKED THE DOOR, AND WENT INTO THE CHURCH BUILDING - NEVER REALIZING THAT MOTOR WAS ACTUALLY STILL RUNNING!! (THEY'RE VERY QUIET WHEN IDLING AND SHE WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND.) ABOUT 20 TO 30 MINUTES LATER, A MAN CAME RUNNING INTO CHURCH THAT KNOWS OF HER VEHICLE AND SAID "YOUR JEEP IS RUNNING, THERE'S SMOKE OR STEAM COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD, THE DOOR IS LOCKED, AND I CAN'T GET IN TO TURN IT OFF! MY DAUGHTER CHECKED AND SHE INDEED HAD THE IGNITION KEY IN HER HAND. SHE RAN OUT OF CHURCH AND UNLOCKED THE DOOR, PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION BUT IT WOULD NOT KILL THE ENGINE! WE HAD TO ENGAGE THE CLUTCH IN A HIGH GEAR ON THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION TO KILL IT. RADIATOR COOLANT ALL OVER THE GROUND. WE FOUND THAT RADIATOR FLUID WAS JUST ABOUT ALL BOILED OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE TIPM WAS ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO CONTINUE TO RUN EVEN THOUGH THE IGNITION WAS OFF AND KEY REMOVED - BUT THE TIPM DID SHUT OFF THE ELECTRICALLY OPERATED COOLING FAN IN FRONT OF THE RADIATOR. THERE WAS ELECTRICAL POWER GOING TO THE MOTOR IGNITION SO THAT THE MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN - BUT W/O A FAN. THE COOLANT BOILED OUT OF THE ENGINE AND HAD OUR FRIEND NOT INTERVENED OUR MOTOR DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE BOILED ITSELF DRY AND CONTINUED TO RUN UNTIL IT EITHER SEIZED UP DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT AND/OR IGNITED A FIRE DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE HEAT (POTENTIALLY BY IGNITING THE FUEL WITHIN THE FUEL SYSTEM?? ELECTRICAL WIRE INSULATION CAUSING AN ELECTRICAL FIRE?? BATTERY BOILING AND FIRE??). AS YOU'RE AWARE, THERE ARE SEVERAL POTENTIAL SECONDARY SOURCES FOR FIRE IGNITION UNDER THE VEHICLE HOOD. *TR
MY JEEP HAS BEEN IN FOR THE 3RD TIME THIS MONTH FOR THE SAME THING. LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. THE 1ST TIME DEALER FOUND THE LEAK BETWEEN TRANSMISSION ADAPTOR HOUSING AND TRANSFER CASE INPUT, REPLACED TRANS. REAR ADAPTOR SEAL AND TRANSFER CASE INPUT SHAFT SEAL. RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER L35 EMISSIONS. CALLED TO GET THE REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD I WOULD NEED TO SHIP THE JEEP TO ANOTHER ISLAND AS CHRYSLER HAS NO REPAIR SERVICE ON MOLOKAI. THE COMPANIES SHOULD HAVE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH A REPAIR SERVICE ON THIS ISLAND. WOULD COST OVER $500 TO SHIP TO OAHU AS THEY SUGGESTED. *TR
I HAVE A 2007 JEEP COMPASS AND TODAY MY HUSBAND NOTICE A LITTLE BIT OF RATTLING IN THE FRONT END. WHEN WE REV UP THE ENGINE IT FADES THE RATTLING OUT.
