Your Jeep has been making grinding metal-on-metal sounds when shifting gears, and the problem got worse over time. You're having trouble shifting into reverse, and the transmission pops out of gear while driving. Your mechanic found that the transmission frame is badly rusted underneath, causing it to tilt and sit on other parts—the bolts that hold the transmission support have pulled out of the rusted frame. The shop says both sides of the frame have rusted through due to poor drainage design, and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Fixing this will require replacing the rusted frame components and the transmission cross-member bolts.

Your Jeep's frame severely rusted despite being garaged and driven less than 90,000 miles, making the vehicle undrivable. You've been unable to find a replacement frame and the vehicle is no longer safe to operate. Addressing this issue would require sourcing and installing a new or heavily restored frame, which is a major structural repair.

NHTSA #: 11096825

Filed: Nov 2017

Your Jeep's frame has rusted severely despite having only 90,000 miles, causing the transmission to drop because the bolts holding it to the frame have corroded. The rust damage is so extensive that repair shops won't attempt repairs, and rust treatment products can't help. Fixing this would require frame replacement or extensive welding and rust removal work.

NHTSA #: 11046953

Filed: Jul 2018

You noticed that your Jeep's frame is completely rusted, and a mechanic confirmed this damage. The manufacturer told you they no longer make replacement frames for your model year. This is a serious structural issue that affects the vehicle's integrity and safety.

Filed: Nov 2018

Your Jeep's frame has started rusting and rotting, which caused the skid plate to hang down and misalign the driveshaft — resulting in power loss while driving. The frame rot appears to stem from poor drainage design that allows water and salt to accumulate inside the frame. You'll likely need professional welding to repair affected areas of the frame and body mounts to restore safe operation.

FireFiled: Sep 2018

Your Jeep caught fire on its own while it was parked and sitting unused for two weeks. No crash was involved — the fire started spontaneously. This is a serious safety hazard that requires immediate investigation by a mechanic or the manufacturer to identify what caused the fire.

NHTSA #: 11129652

Air Bags2 issues
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Apr 2024

Your airbag clock spring has failed, which triggered the airbag warning light and disabled your entire airbag system. Unfortunately, Jeep has discontinued this part for 2001-2002 models, and no aftermarket manufacturers currently make a replacement. You'll need to contact a Jeep dealer or find a compatible used part to restore airbag functionality.

NHTSA #: 11584347
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: May 2019

Your airbag warning light is turning on while you drive at various speeds. A dealer diagnosed that your passenger airbag needs to be replaced. The problem happened again years after the initial repair. The fix will involve replacing the passenger airbag assembly.

FireFiled: Aug 2017

While driving with the air conditioner on, you smelled burning plastic and saw smoke coming from the air vents. After turning off the AC and pulling over, the smoke stopped after about 15 minutes. When you inspected the AC system later, you found that the electrical connector to the blower motor resistor had caught fire. The repair will likely involve replacing the burnt connector and the blower motor resistor, and inspecting the wiring for damage.

Suspension,structure1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Apr 2017

Your Jeep's frame has rusted completely through just behind where the rear suspension arms connect, creating two holes about 1 inch across. The corroded metal has weakened the frame, and stress from normal driving has caused cracks to form and connect these holes together, compromising the structural integrity of your vehicle.

Electrical System,visibility/wiper1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
Filed: Nov 2022

The electrical wiring connected to your climate control panel and blower motor fan switch gets too hot and melts the switch, preventing you from turning on the heat, air conditioning, or adjusting fan speeds. This means you can't use the defroster, which can create poor windshield visibility and make driving unsafe. The fix will likely involve replacing the melted blower motor fan switch and potentially rewiring or repairing the electrical connections to prevent overheating.

Your 2001 Jeep Wrangler failed a New York state safety inspection due to rust on the tubular frame. The owner believes the rust developed prematurely because the frame lacks weep holes to allow water to drain out, causing water to get trapped inside and rust the frame from the inside out. This rust is expensive to repair and poses a safety concern. Addressing frame rust typically requires professional inspection and may involve rust treatment, sealing, or structural repair depending on the extent of the damage.
