Hello, I am the original owner for my 2018 Hyundai Sonata. I have now had numerous issues with this vehicle that has now left me stalled on the highway twice resulting in a near accident and the vehicle being towed twice to a dealership. I am now having issues with oil consumption with me needing to put in at least 1q per week to ensure the reading on the dipstick is above “L”.

This engine consumes oil rapidly to the point I have to add quarts of it constantly . This results in the spark plugs deteriorating at a rapid rate and the coil packs as well. The car only has 75,000 miles but the problems began to start around 69,000 miles because of these issues and the engine and burning oil because of the rings and pressure it begins to shake rapidly and sputter and stall out.

Car does not when temperature drops below 30 degrees (Fahrenheit) even when garaged so you cannot drive car and u have to be towed several times at night. A local mechanic studied issue and did replacement on the relay switch and starter and now car starts in cold weather.

SATURDAY MORNING, WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE BLUELINK LIT UP SAYING MY CAR NEEDED TO BE SERVICED. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO GOSSETT HYUNDAI AT MT. MORIAH. AFTER GOING BACK AND FORTH (IN FRONT OF THE TECH) THEY AGREED TO RUN A DIAGNOSTIC (BECAUSE I TOLD THEM I WAS WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING MY CAR TO THE COVINGTON PIKE LOCATION), AND THE TECH INFORMED ME THAT HE WAS A TECH AND HE COULD RUN THE DIAGNOSTIC. AFTER RUNNING THE DIAGNOSTIC, I WAS TOLD THAT ONE OF MY CYLINDERS WAS NOT FIRING. AFTER SOME PERIOD OF TIME, THEY LOCATED AN IGNITION COIL IN THE PARTS ROOM AND REPLACED IT. THE CAR STILL WAS NOT RUNNING CORRECTLY, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR NEEDED A SPARK PLUG BUT THEY WOULDN'T HAVE ONE UNTIL TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2019. AFTER THE DEALERSHIP RECEIVED THE SPARK PLUG AND INSTALLED IT (I GUESS?), THE CAR WAS STILL SHAKING AND NOT RUNNING CORRECTLY. SOMETIME JUNE 5 OR 6TH, THEY CALLED HYUNDAI MANUFACTURING AND HAVE BEEN RECEIVING INSTRUCTION FROM THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY TO RUN LEAK TESTS. I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY ALSO USED A CAMERA TO LOOK DOWN IN THE CYLINDER AND THAT IT HAS 'SCARRING' WHICH COULD BE FROM FLUID GETTING INSIDE? I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT IT IS PROBABLE THAT MY CAR WILL NEED A COMPLETE NEW ENGINE. IT HAS BEEN 2 WEEKS AND THE DEALERSHIP IS WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SPEED AUTOMATICALLY DECREASED TO 10 MPH. THE CONTACT STATED THEY SLOWLY DROVE BACK TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A NEW ENGINE WAS NEEDED. HOWEVER, A WEEK LATER HE WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THE WIRE HARNESS HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD SPOKEN TO THE MANUFACTURER VIA EMAIL AND WAS PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER: 15658545. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,713.

AFTER A FEW DAYS, THE MANUFACTURER CALLED BACK AND OFFERED A REPURCHASE REVIEW AND PROMISED TO CALL BACK. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A CALL BACK AND WAS INFORMED THAT A REPURCHASE REVIEW WOULD TAKE ANOTHER MONTH TO REVIEW. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY NEEDED TO CONDUCT RESEARCH TO SEE IF IT FELL UNDER THE REPURCHASE REVIEW OR LEMON LAW. THE CONTACT WAS STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK AND CONTACTED HIS STATE'S ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,087.

THEY GAME ME A RENTAL CAR BECAUSE THE HARNESS IS NOT IN "STOCK" SO LETS SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES..I JUST NOTICED THERE IS A LOT OF THE SAME PROBLEM REPORTED TO THIS CAR WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. 4221 MILES BRAND NEW SEL+ MODEL...

JANUARY 2019, VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR RECALL FOR ENGINE FAILURE. MARCH 2019, WENT TO START VEHICLE. FLASHING ENGINE LIGHT. COULD NOT GET ABOVE 2000 RPM. DEALER ADVISED TO TOW VEHICLE. DEALER ADVISED CAR IS IN LIMP MODE. DEALER ADVISED POSSIBLE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. TWO WEEKS LATER, CAR IS STILL NOT REPAIRED. NOW THEY ARE POSSIBLY REPLACING 'HARNESS'. ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE VEHICLE ANOTHER TWO WEEKS.

MY 2018 SONATA WENT TO THE DEALER FOR THE CHAMPAIGN 953 SOFTWARE UPDATE, FOR ENGINE KNOCK SENSOR ENHANCEMENT . AFTER THE UPDATE WAS COMPLETED THE CAR IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO TO PROTECTION MODE CAUSING THE CAR NOT TO ACCELERATE WHEN PULLING OUT OF THE DEALER ONTO A 4 LANE HIGHWAY, NEARLY CAUSING 4 PEOPLE TO INJURED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER AND BY HYUNDAI THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPING BEFORE, BUT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME INSTANCE HAPPING TO PEOPLE ON COMPLAINT SIGHTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ORDERED THE DEALER TO PERFORM MORE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.

HAD OIL CHANGED ON 1/24/2019, THEY DID THE ECM UPDATE FOR THE KNOCKS SENSER AND AFTERWARDS ON THE WAY HOME THE CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I ALSO RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM HYUNDAI BLUE LINK SAYING THAT AN ENGINE COMPONENT HAD FAILED. TOOK BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY GAVE ME A LOANER. THEY SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO HEAR BACK FROM HYUNDAI IN CA?? SOUNDS LIKE NOBODY KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON??

I HAD AN OIL CHANGE ON FRIDAY 1/18/2019 THE NEXT DAY I'M DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE USING CRUISE CONTROL AND MY CAR CUT MY CRUISE CONTROL OFF AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND MY CAR WOULD NOT GO OVER 20MPH EVEN WITH THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. THE SCREEN IN MY CAR POPPED UP A MESSAGE THAT SAID THE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM HAD SOME TYPE OF FAILURE. 2 DAYS IN AT THE DEALERSHIP AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. IT'S NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD, IDLES FAIRLY HARD, AND NOW WON'T ACCELERATE.

It has oil consumption issues

Purchased a 2028 Sonata Sport in 2022 not knowing oil consumption was an issue. After noticing that my oil was low after I would get an oil change made me very suspicious. Drove to a Hyundai Service Center and paid out of pocket for a diagnostic.

My car is consuming oil. Hyundai knows this is happening with the theta II engines. I was told to bring it in and do an oil consumption test which shows my car is consuming 1 qt oil every 406 miles but was denied help due to it being high Mileage and not under warranty.

Car keeps burning oil faster than normal which has resulted in car not starting multiple times even after a month old oil change.

2018 Hyundai Sonata with only 128k miles already needs a new engine due to oil consumption. I have done the regular maintenance on the car and have only put roughly 25k miles on the car since owning it

The vehicle is burning oil at a high rate in a short period of time, a known issue that is affecting thousands of other people, and Hyundai refuses to issue a recall to fix this issue. If I forget to add oil every 500-1000 miles, I risk the engine locking up while driving. Their cars are dangerous to drive and are unsafe to be on the road with other drivers.

As detailed in the attached letter to Hyundai, the car has had multiple engine issues that the company refuses to resolve even though they are well aware of the on-going engine problems in Sonatas. The problem started in August 2023 and is on-going.

Purchased this vehicle with about 64K miles. Vehicle, as per CarFax report, has been meticulously maintained. Upon delivery, we changed the oil and filter with full-synthetic Amsoil.

While I was driving the car shut off by itself.

Car consumes TOO much oil. Even after I get an oil change I have to add more oil weeks later and the oil is always black. Several times the sensor has gone out on me on the hwy and I’m not able to accelerate or go over 35 miles which is extremely dangerous .

Hairline crack in engine oil pan possibly resulting in engine failure

There is a rod barring warranty on my car for my engine. My engine has completely faulted. Hyundai has informed me that they are going to take at least 3 months to fix it and will not give me a vehicle for the time they have mine.

The engine is burning oil. Oil level drops by 3-4 quarts every 1,500 miles.

I turned on my car and the malfunction indicator light turned on my dash board. I put the car in reverse and ignored it. Kept driving.
