2015 Hyundai Sonata Engine Problems

The vehicle suddenly lost power while driving on a public roadway. Immediately after, the vehicle began producing a large amount of smoke. The smoke quickly filled the cabin, making it difficult to breathe and creating an urgent safety hazard.

While driving on the freeway, my vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic engine failure. The check engine light began flashing, the vehicle lost power, and I almost lost control of the car. I barely had time to pull over to the shoulder to avoid an accident.

Description of Safety Problem: My vehicle experienced a sudden catastrophic engine failure while driving, resulting in a complete loss of power and severe engine knocking. This is a known safety defect related to the Theta II engine (specifically, connecting rod bearing failure, often referred to as the KSDS defect) that poses a severe risk of stalling and engine fire.

I was driving (I4 highway) when my car suddenly stalled, causing engine failure and almost putting my life at risk, causing an accident. This car has a factory recall for engine damage. I took it to the dealer, and Hyundai refuses to accept the engine repair because the title is rebuilt.

Engine Failure for a 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.4L In-Line4 (144CI) VIN(F) Odometer 141477. Engine starts then runs hot starts clunking and sputtering and then shuts off. Burns oil and has caused a complete exhaust failure.

Dear NHTSA Investigations Team, We are the owners of a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, purchased in 2016 and still in use today. This vehicle is suffering from severe engine issues linked to the Theta II engine defect, which has been the subject of recalls and class action lawsuits. For nearly a year, we have been forced to add approximately 2 quarts of oil every week due to extreme oil consumption.

I had a standard oil change done on my car and it was running fine afterwards. Later that evening, my car started smoking and spontaneously burst into flames from the hood. The fire originated in the hood of the car and melted the entire front of my car as well as the entire inside.

My car 2015 (Hyundai Sonata)started leaking oil, it only had 50,000 miles. my mechanic said the motor had too much pressure and kept pushing oil out. He advised me to take it to the dealership for a motor recall.

The car was on a major highway, went to pass another car and the engine stopped working. While trying to get the car off the road there was almost an accident involving on coming traffic.

In 8-2021 the original engine locked up due to a crankshaft bearing lock up. The dealer replaced the entire engine with a rebuilt. It locked up within 10 seconds after I drove from the dealer due to a massive external oil leak from the engine front area.

As I pulled out onto the road to go north onto a two lane Hwy towards my home, a truck pulling a trailer came into view from the left.

Approximately five weeks ago, my 2015 Hyundai Sonata showed a check engine light. I took it into the dealer and paid a diagnostic fee which revealed the third cylinder misfire in the engine. I paid to have the engine cleaned yet the light continues to stay on and the car has been Running low on oil every time it gets checked the dealer states that the engine needs to be replaced

over the course of this last year I've been in contact with Hyundai motors of America and my local Hyundai dealership after my 2015 Hyundai was showing signs of engine issues I was traveling along I-95 with my child at highway speeds when my car suddenly came to a stop causing panic and what could've been a tragic accident. had I wasn't able to regain control of my car.

since around 6/2022 been having oil issues but really didn't start getting bad till 12/2022 while driving car has rattling noise with acceleration and almost stalls due to oil light kept popping on and off come to find out I was almost out of oil.

While driving on a highway, I heard a rattling sound, which could best be described as tying cans to the car and dragging them along the road. I had never heard this noise before. No safety indicator lights turned on to alert me of any issue.

Ports internal to valve cover were blocked. Oil blowing out of valve cover jacket, filling spark plug wells and causing misfiring. Concerned about fire hazard for all leaks.

Oil is leaking from the turbo oil feed hose onto the hot engine, hot exhaust and engine undercover that has a potential for a fire hazard in addition to toxic fumes from oil burning seeping into the car.

Engine caught fire from unknown means.

My car has 113,000 miles and the engine went out going down the highway with my young daughter in the car. This could have been a disaster if someone would have been behind us. After researching about my issues I found almost all their motors are going out or catching fire.

Engine had knocking then completely froze while driving due to low oil pressure. Car has been well maintained, regular oil changes and just had axle repaired. Hyundai has extended warranty to cover this issue that is common on these vehicles and should cover the cost of the new motor.

Was diving the car and experienced system failure, no prior warnings or issues. Had regular oil changes throughout, however, a few days ago in normal driving conditions, the check engine light began flashing and car felt like it was losing power. I experienced extremely high revving at idle(about 1500 RPM to 1750 RPM). I also experienced a dangerous loss of acceleration when trying to accelerate. I would put the accelerator to the floor and it would take about 10-15 seconds to reach a safe speed on a highway on ramp.

My car caught on fire while operating

My motor to my vehicle all of a sudden started making noises as I was on my way home and dropped speed and didn’t accelerate past 55MPH, my car started stuttering every time I hit the gas and it won’t go past 2000RPM and my check engine light started blinking at me. I drove 200 miles from my home to charlevoix, michigan. While driving I noticed that the engine was making a 'whooshing sound' every time I accelerated. This happened at highway speeds and at normal city driving speeds.

Air intake hose from the air filter box to the turbocharger inlet - 2.0 turbo engine - melted and broke. Reduced power and potentially foreign debris can enter the turbocharger and damage it, reducing power even further. Apparently many owners with the 2.0 turbo engine have experienced the same issue.

Heat from turbo melted air intake tube

The hose leading to the turbo has melted off. The clamp with hose rubber remain firmly attached to the turbo with the remainder of the hose has fallen below the turbo air inlet. The issue occurred suddenly from one night to the next morning.

Insurance companies are not proving insurance because of rise in theft of Hyundai vehicle. Now they are asking to install remote start kit for physical engine immobilizer. Cost of this installation is $350 - $500, Hyundai is not entertaining this issue.

Engine started knocking out of nowhere took it to the dealership to see if I had a recall was told that I needed to replace engine which would cost between 8k-10k . The recalls for engines on Hyundai sonatas were for 2011-2013 and 2016 . Not really understanding how they skip a year with everyone with this year .

THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 20V746000 RECALL.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY ENGINE ABRUPTLY DIED WITH ALL SUBSEQUENT WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON. MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER DID NOT SEEM SURPRISED BY THIS REVELATION AND THEY STILL WONT TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS BEEN UN THEIR POSSESSION FOR 72 HOURS.

THE CONNECTING-ROD BEARINGS IN THE ENGINE WORE OUT PREMATURELY. MY CAR ONLY HAS 75,000 MILES ON IT AND DOES NOT COME UP ON A VIN SEARCH AT HYUNDAI AS A RECALL VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH IT HAS THE 1.6 GAMMA MOTOR IN IT. THE DESCRIPTION FROM HYUNDAI OF THE ISSUE IS THE FOLLOWING, "ABNORMAL KNOCKING NOISES FROM THE ENGINE, REDUCED POWER OR HESITATION, ILLUMINATION OF THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT OR THE ENGINE OIL-PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT; OR A BURNING SMELL, OIL LEAKS, OR SMOKE." THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO US WHEN THE CAR DIED. WE TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC WHO WAS SHOCKED AT HOW WORN THE BEARING WEAR AND THE LARGE AMOUNT OF METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL.

My car was under the hyundai engine recall campaign the engine was replaced at 60k now have 113k the car star to giving issues and smoke for the engine cap and muffler and oil disptick the car was take to the dealership because was under the hyundai extended warranty until 120k or life time after the dealer make the inspection they contact hyundai and they ask for pictures the pictures was sended car was fine no oil deposited everything was clean hyundai after 6 days o back and for they denied the engine claim demanding the the car was no under warranty if my car was under the extended how they said that without even give an explanation I attached the conversation between the dealership ans hyundai dealer

WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP (AS INSTRUCTED BY THE DEALERSHIP) AND THEY REFUSED TO PROVIDE SERVICES UNTIL A DIAGNOSIS FEE WAS PROVIDED; EVEN THOUGH THEY TOLD US TO BRING IT BACK IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THEY WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM AT NO COST. WE REFUSED TO PAY THE FEE SINCE THEY HAD TOLD US THEY WOULD FIX IT FOR FREE AND THE CAR SAT FOR ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO WHILE WE USED MY HUSBANDS PARENTS VEHICLE (SINCE IT IS OUR ONLY VEHICLE). WE EVENTUALLY DROVE IT TO A THIRD PARTY MECHANIC (WHILE BEING JERKED AROUND BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD LOSE POWER AND GOING 20MPH IN A 35MPH ZONE) AND HE CHANGED OUT THE KNOCKER ROD AND HEAD GASKETS AFTER STATING IT WAS THE ISSUE AFTER HOOKING IT UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AND GETTING CODES TO CHANGE THOSE SPECIFIC ITEMS. IT SEEMED TO WORK FOR ABOUT FIVE MONTHS, UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY (IN TRAFFIC) WHEN IT WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" ONCE MORE. THE DEALERSHIP DECIDED TO TAKE THE CAR IN TO LOOK AT IT, PROVIDED A RENTAL CAR AND INDICATED THE CAR NEEDED A NEW ENGINE BEFORE SERVICE (BECAUSE IT KEEPS GOING INTO LIMP MODE). THEY CALLED US YESTERDAY TO LET US KNOW THAT IT JUST NEEDED ANOTHER "SOFTWARE UPDATE". I HAVE BEEN TOLD SOFTWARE UPDATES DON'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE, IT PUSHES THE PROBLEM BACK AND IT WILL REOCCUR. I HAVE ALREADY CALLED AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE DEALERSHIPS CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT (THAT THE SERVICE MANAGER FROM THE DEALERSHIP GAVE US) AND AM WAITING FOR A CALL BACK. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE. I HAVE A TODDLER AND AM PREGNANT AND FEAR FOR MY FAMILIES SAFETY WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE.

WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY WITH A 55 MPH SPEED LIMIT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR HESITATED AND WAS DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN THE SPEED LIMIT. THE CODE, P200A IS DESCRIBED IN A HYUNDAI TECHNICAL SERVICE REPORT FOR 2015 - 2016 SONATAS HOWEVER AFTER TAKING THE CAR INTO NEW PORT RICHEY HYUNDAI I WAS TOLD THAT THE SERVICE BULLETIN DIDN'T APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. IT IS A DANGER TO DRIVE WITH THE CONTROL UNIT FAILING AND MAY AT ANY TIME CAUSE THE CAR TO DECELLARATE.

Engine knocking, checked the oil and it was fine. Drove it straight home which was about three miles. The next day I was driving it to work and the knocking was getting louder and louder, pulled over, checked the oil and it was sludge.

Hi NHTSA, I drive a 2015 hyundai sonata and followed all the recommended maintenance. I started to notice my oil level was below low after 2000 miles at 47000 on the vehicle. I thought it was not filled correctly and had my mechanic check it.

2015 hyundai sonata sport 2.0t limited leaking oil from the theta 2.0 turbo oil feed hose. Hyundai issued a service campaign t1n for the same exact problem for their 2011-2014 sonata 2.0t models. I am having the same exact problem with my 2015 and their is no recall.

I was in motion (just coming out of a steep canyon on an interstate/highway) and suddenly the engine just stopped. The check oil, check engine, and check battery lights flashed because my ignition was still on, but I had to try to coast to a safe stop. No warning, no overheating, no issues with battery or oil or other fluids.

Engine has approximately 60,000 miles and burns between half to one quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Hyundai dealer performed an "oil consumption test" where they recorded oil level after 1,000 miles three times. After the first 1k miles it was down about half a quart of oil, same on second 1k miles, and about 1 quart on third 1k miles.

Received a sonata's engine control unit letter, stating a product improvement campaign has been issued on my car, on excessive connecting rod bearing wear in the engine. I have the limited edition, 2.0l turbocharged. When the engine is cold, and if you tip-in aggressively, you can hear some screeching sound above 5000 RPM of the engine, easily achieved in second or third gear. The turbo is designed by mitsubishi and I knew someone who works there.

This is the second 2015 hyundai sonata which had computer problems. The first one purchased in july 2014, hyundai took it back in dec 2014 because of the computer problems. The second picked up in dec 2014 currently has approximately 2900miles with the same basic computer issues.

Vehicle is putting out a very strong gasoline odor, especially when sitting idle. I looked up previous recalls on the vehicle and seen where there was a recall I believe in 2022 for similar issues.

My vehicle has an oil consumption problem despite the fact that my car has been excluded from the class action lawsuit. I’ve had it in the shop and they have confirmed the oil consumption issues. There are countless other vehicles excluded from the class action lawsuit that have the same theta engine as the other vehicles that were included in the lawsuit.

About 20000 miles ago, I was informed by my servicing center that my Sonata came it without oil on the dipstick. My car currently has 90k and my engine is burning about 1qt of oil every 1000 miles. Many people have been having issues with these engines from Hyundai and Kia.

Oil consumption issues. Had a brand new factory motor to replace original motor due to engine failure from oil consumption issues on June 29 2020 at 154,285 miles. The new motor only has 56,665 miles on it and I'm having to add extra oil in between changes because it is bone dry after about 1800 miles from oil change each time.

My vehicle is available for inspection The problem has been confirmed by an oil service company Valvoline in Munster, Indiana The "oil" lamp appeared on my dashboard for a brief moment. I filed claim with BBB Arbitration for the Hyundai Theta Engine Recall but since my engine hasn't blown up, they will probably deny it.

Faulty motor. No warning lamps or any other symptoms prior motor failure. At 123,310 miles motor spun lower camshaft bearing cause motor to lock up on a busy highway.

We have had some issues but take very good care of the car maintenance wise. The car went into limp mode and we took it in they ran it and came up as the knock sensor.. I noticed there was a huge recall for these cars.

The engine consumes extraordinary amounts of engine oil. At 72,000 miles, over 70% of engine oil is lost between an oil change range of 7500 miles. Radiator fluid levels drop as well.

I purchased my 2015 hyundai sonata recently with only 46k miles on it. After 3 weeks, the engine started clicking loudly and it literally sounded like a roller coaster being pulled uphill when under load. A week later the ticking was constant.
