Your windshield developed a horizontal crack about 8 inches long on the driver's side while the car was parked with no impact or rock chips, during cold weather (15-25°F). The crack continued to spread overnight while parked, reaching 24 inches within a week. You report the windshield appears thinner than windshields in your previous cars, and you're concerned about the windshield's durability and whether this is a manufacturing defect rather than normal wear.
