FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WALL THICKNESS OF THE RIGHT FORWARD BAFFLE OF THE FUEL TANK MAY BE BELOW SPECIFICATIONS.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL TANKS AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. ALL VEHICLES ARE EITHER STILL AT THE MANUFACTURING PLANT OR IN DEALERSHIPS. NO VEHICLES HAVE BEEN SOLD TO CONSUMERS.

Your check engine light keeps coming on, especially when your gas tank drops below half full. The dealer has diagnosed the engine running too lean (not enough fuel in the air-fuel mixture) and found issues including a small leak in the intake manifold, worn spark plugs, and failing fuel injectors. Despite multiple repair attempts including resetting the engine computer, timing belt replacement, and spark plug changes, the problem has returned. Fixing this will likely require replacing the intake manifold, fuel injectors, and spark plugs to restore the proper fuel mixture.

When I bought this vehicle they were in cahoots with the nearby dealership, so no issues like this recall were found. I was NEVER TOLD ABOUT THE RECALLS because they trying to CHARGE ME!!!! This HAS always HAD this PROBLEM AND AT ONE TIME HAD A FUEL SENSOR problem.....I was told it was no problem to make the appointment at one Hyundai dealership and they had the VIN & NOW .....Now, that I had made an appt. with another dealership this is an issue and ALL of the factory recall issues were fixed, except for the hitch. IT NEVER was. I called the Hyundai Recall customer service # number and of course, they say there are no issues...The recall # is 077.

IN DOING A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH WHILE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT THE ISSUE MIGHT BE - IT SEEMS THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD AND KNOWN HYUNDAI PROBLEM THAT HASN'T BEEN ADDRESSED BECUASE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A LOSS OF LIFE. WHEN THE TANK GETS TO APROX HALF FULL THE NEEDLE WILL TRAVEL TO EMPTY. I HAVE SEARCHED FOR A RECALL, BUT FOUND NONE. WHEN RESEARCHING THE RECALL I NOTICED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE SANTA FE VEHICLES.

IN ADDITION TO BEING A COSTLY CONSUMER REPAIR DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER DEFECT; THIS IS VERY PROBABLY A SAFETY ISSUE IN THAT WITHOUT A RELIABLE FUEL INDICATOR ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THE VEHICLE OPERATOR COULD EASILY, UNKNOWINGLY, RUN OUT OF FUEL WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THOSE IN THE SUV BEING INJURED OR WORSE. THIS PROBLEM EXISTS WHENEVER THE SUV IS BEING DRIVEN ON A ROADWAY AS WELL AS WHEN PARKED WITH THE ENGINE ON OR RUNNING. THIS SUV ONLY HAS 44,000 MILES ON IT.

I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WOULDN'T PASS THE INSPECTION WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND THE CODES SHOWED THE FUEL GAUGE SENSORS WERE BAD. WE WERE DOING 45MPH AT THE TIME WE LEFT THE ROAD AND HOT THE BUSHES. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED TOTALED BY THE ADJUSTER. SO WE REPLACED THE CAR WITH ANOTHER 2007 SANTA FE LIMITED AND AT FIRST ALL WAS GOOD. NOW THE FUEL SENDING UNITS ARE NOT WORKING. IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THE GAS TANKS(2) ARE CONSIDERED SADDLEBACKS AND ARE LOCATED UNDER THE REAR SEAT. THE OBD ERRORS CODES STATE THAT NEITHER UNIT IS WORKING AND IT IS NOW COSTING US AN ADDITIONAL $525 - AS IT FAILED THE MASSACHUSETTS STATE EMISSIONS TEST. HYUNDAI IS AWARE THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE AND IS NOT BEING TOLD TO FIX IT. CONSUMERS DESERVE BETTER.

THIS ISSUE COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, PEOPLE DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THEIR TANKS AND THEY CAN INADVERTENTLY RUN OUT OF FUEL ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON RURAL ROADS. I ALSO AM HAVING MANY ISSUES WITH MY SUV. AS OTHERS HAVE STATES THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE OFF WHILE DRIVING. I HAD TO CUT THE WIRE TO GET IT TO STOP DANGLING. I NOW HAVE NO DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR. I ALSO HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON DUE TO MY FUEL SENSORS. MY GAS GAUGE FLUCTUATES. I HAVE TO GO BASED OFF MILEAGE WHEN TO GET GAS. LAST MARCH I NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND THE VEHICLE HESITATING TO STALLING OUT WHEN COLD AND ACCELERATING. THIS IS WORSE THE COLDER IT GETS OUTSIDE. ALSO WHEN DRIVING YOU CAN FEEL A HESITATION/MISSING GOING ON, ALMOST LIKE THE GAS ISN'T FLOWING STEADILY INTO THE ENGINE. AND RECENTLY MY GAS GAUGE IS NOT SHOWING ACCURATELY WHAT IS IN THE GAS TANK. I'LL FILL UP AND IT STILL READS EMPTY WITH THE LOW FUEL LIGHT ON AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. IT'LL EVENTUALLY AFTER FEW START UPS START TO "SUPPOSEDLY" DISPLAY THE CORRECT GAS AMT ON THE GAUGE. I RESET MY TRIP METER TO MEASURE HOW MANY MILES ON THE TANK SO I DON'T RUN OUT. BUT THE STALLING ON ACCELERATION IS A BIG ISSUE. THIS COULD HAPPEN AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AND END UP CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I'VE READ ON THIS SIGHT OTHERS HAVING SAME PROBLEM.. I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH A GMC ENVOY, ABOUT THE SAME YEAR AS MY HYUNDAI, GMC MADE GOOD ON THE PROBLEM AND COVERED THE EXPENSES AS THEY HAD A "SILENT" RECALL ON THAT ISSUE. TWO WEEKS AGO, I STARTED MY CAR AND WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE FUEL GAUGE WAY BELOW "E" AND THE LIGHT HAD TURNED ON, ALONG WITH THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT. I WAS AFRAID I HAD NEGLECTED TO GET GAS, EVEN THOUGHT I WAS PRETTY SURE THAT WHEN I LEFT THE CAR THE NIGHT BEFORE I WAS OVER A 1/4 OF A TANK. I MADE IT TO THE GAS STATION AND FUELED UP. I ONLY PUT $20 IN AT THE TIME, BECAUSE I WAS IN A HURRY. I GOT IN, STARTED THE CAR AND I WAS UP ALMOST FULL, WHICH IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE ON $20 IN A SANTA FE. IT TURNS OUT I HAD PLENTY OF GAS IN THE TANK AND THE GAUGE WASN'T REGISTERING IT PROPERLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE CAR NEEDS TO "WARM UP" BEFORE THE FUEL GAUGE ACTUALLY REGISTERS THE AMOUNT OF GAS CORRECTLY. AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUES TO GO ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY. I AM CONCERNED THAT PROBLEM COULD WORSEN WITH TIME AND WILL EFFECT OTHER SYSTEMS IN THE CAR. WE DROVE FOR A LITTLE BIT AND THE FUEL LIGHT CAME ON AS WELL AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ALL OF A SUDDEN. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THAT BOTH THE SENSORS IN THE FUEL TANK HAD STOPPED WORKING. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND IT APPEARS THERE IS SOMETHING UNIQUE GOING ON WITH THESE FUEL SENSORS. MOST ALL THE ISSUES I COULD FIND WERE ONLY 2007 & 2008 SANTA FES. I WOULD SEEM HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT JUST THESE TWO MODEL YEAR HAVE THIS ISSUE UNLESS THEY GOT A DEFECTIVE BATCH OF FUEL SENSORS THAT WENT INTO THEM OR THE INSTALLATION WAS FAULTY, ETC. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN JUST OVER 5 YEAR MARK WHICH IS JUST OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY. I FEEL THAT AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE DONE INTO THIS MATTER. *TR

I TOOK MY 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE TO THE DEALER ON 4/6/12 BECAUSE THE GAS GAUGE WAS FLUCTUATING CONSTANTLY. I COULD NOT TELL HOW MUCH GAS WAS IN THE TANK AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THEY REPLACED THE GAS FLOAT DURING THAT VISIT. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR FROM THE DEALER, THE CAR WAS FILLED WITH STRONG GAS FUMES. ALL OF THE TECHNICIANS AND SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES WERE GONE WHEN I ARRIVED SO I DID NOT HAVE ANYONE TO TALK TO ABOUT IT. I FIGURED THE SMELL WOULD GO AWAY BUT THE PROBLEM SURFACED EVERY TIME I FILLED MY GAS TANK MORE THAN HALF FULL. THE SMELL LESSENS DURING THE DAY AS THE CAR AIRS OUT WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN BUT AFTER SITTING OVERNIGHT OR ALL DAY WITH THE DOORS AND WINDOWS CLOSED, THE FUMES BUILD UP AGAIN. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER ON 6/27/12 AND COMPLAINED OF THE OVERPOWERING GAS FUMES EVERY TIME I PUT GAS IN MY CAR. I EXPLAINED THAT I NOTICED A PATTERN OF THE FUMES BECOMING WORSE IF THE TANK WAS MORE THAN HALF FULL AND I COULD NO LONGER FILL UP MY GAS TANK IN ORDER TO AVOID THE FUMES. THEY RETURNED THE CAR TO ME AND SAID THEY COULD NOT SMELL ANY FUMES NOR COULD THEY FIND A POSSIBLE CAUSE. EVERYTHING WAS SAID TO BE FINE WITH THE CAR. AFTER PUTTING GAS IN THE CAR ON 11/16/2012, THE CAR BECAME SO OVERWHELMINGLY FULL OF INTENSE GAS FUMES THAT I INSTANTLY DEVELOPED A HEADACHE AS SOON AS I GOT IN IT. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALER THE NEXT MORNING BECAUSE I AM NO LONGER CONFIDENT THE CAR IS SAFE. I DO NOT WANT TO CONTINUE BREATHING GAS FUMES AND GETTING HEADACHES WHEN I GET IN THE CAR. ONCE AGAIN THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH NO REPORT OF A PROBLEM. THEY HAD THE WINDOWS AND VENTS OPEN SO I AM NOT SURPRISED THEY DID NOT SMELL GAS. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT MAYBE I WAS TOPPING OFF THE GAS TANK TOO MUCH OR SPILLING GAS AROUND THE GAS CAP. TOOK VEHICLE OVER TO HALL HYUNDAI OF CHESAPEAKE APRIL 7TH, 2018. I FILLED THE TANK UP SO THE ORDER COULD BE SMELL AND IT WAS NOTICED. THEY STATED THAT THEY TOOK OUT THE BACK SEAT AND TOOK THE UNIT OUT AND PUT IT BACK IN AND TIGHTENED IT. THEY SAY THE CLEANED THE CARPET AND IONIZED IT. I WAS THERE FROM 9:40 A.M. UNTIL 4:20 P.M. WHEN I GOT INTO THE SUV A STRONG ODOR OF CLEANING SOLUTION WAS PRESENT. IT IS NOW MONDAY, APRIL 9TH 2012 AND THE PRESENT OF THE SMELL OF GAS IT STILL THERE. FUEL GAUGE SENSOR DEFECTIVE AFTER UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF TIME. UNRELIABLE, GAUGE FAILS TO DISPLAY CORRECT AMOUNT OF FUEL IN GAS TANK. DEALER STATES SENOR IN THE FUEL TANK HAS "GONE BAD". THIS ISSUES - DISPLAYS ILLUMINATED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND EITHER GIVES FLUXUATING FALSE NEEDLE READING ON THE FUEL TANK GAUGE OR EMPTY TANK ON CLUSTER DISPLAY PANEL.
