My car stalls while in motion without warning. While driving the vehicle will randomly speed up and rpm will fly up without command. I also experience a lot of engine power loss randomly the vehicle will bog and be slow. Occasionally when I press on the accelerator I can almost go to the floor with no response from the vehicle. Speed acceleration response is delayed approximately 30 seconds occasionally. Uncommanded acceleration and random stalling when vehicle is in motion has been a big safety risk for me. This issue has been ongoing for awhile. This issue has occurred countless times so it’s very frequent. This complaint is in compliance with the current open investigation regarding the throttle control system vulnerabilities. NHTSA Action Number: DP21003
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING, THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR SENSOR WAS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOSE POWER FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE SECONDS. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. IF THE CONTACT PUSHED THE ESC BUTTON, THE VEHICLE WOULD OPERATE NORMALLY. THE CONTACT CALLED DON FRANKLIN LEXINGTON HYUNDAI (3340 RICHMOND RD, LEXINGTON, KY 40509, (859) 263-5020) AND WAS QUOTED A REPAIR COST OF $900 FOR THE SENSOR, WHICH DID NOT INCLUDE LABOR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,200.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE RPMS REVVED WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS BEING DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HERB CHAMBERS HYUNDAI OF AUBURN (LOCATED AT 735 SOUTHBRIDGE ST, AUBURN, MA 01501, (508) 832-9990) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. ADDITIONALLY, THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000. *TT*JB
INITIAL ISSUE WAS AUTOMATIC SPEED CONTROL (CRUISE CNTRL), WILL NOT STAY ENGAGED. CRUISE NO LONGER WORKS IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN TO TURN IT ON. THIS ISSUE BEGAN AROUND JAN 2017. NEXT ISSUE IS ESC OFF LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON AND WILL NOT RESET WITHOUT RESTART. LATEST ISSUE IS THE 3RD BRAKE LIGHT IS THE ONLY BRAKE LIGHT WORKING. THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND ESC ISSUE BEGAN AROUND MARCH 2018.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WHILE BEING OPERATED AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. VISION HYUNDAI WEBSTER (755 RIDE RD, WEBSTER, NY) WAS CONTACTED, BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,554.
WHILE DRIVING OR STATIONARY AND PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL SOMETIMES THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY AND UNPREDICTABLY INCREASE IN ACCELERATION OR RPMS, RESPECTIVELY, WAY MORE THAN INTENDED EVEN AFTER RELEASING THE GAS PEDAL. A COUPLE POINTS TO NOTE: 1) THE CAR IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND DURING THE DESCRIBED EPISODE IF YOU PRESS THE CLUTCH AND PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL THE RPMS WILL SUDDENLY JUMP TO BETWEEN 6000-8000 RPMS WHERE THEY WILL STAY SOMETIMES FOR A 1 MINUTE BEFORE RETURNING TO NORMAL; 2) DURING THIS UNPREDICTABLE INCREASE IN ACCELERATION OR RPMS (IF WHILE IN NEUTRAL), THE GAS PEDAL FEELS STUCK AS THOUGH IT DOES NOT RETURN TO ITS NORMAL STATE; 3) WHILE IN GEAR AND DRIVING, TAKING FOOT OFF GAS PEDAL DOES NOT REALIZE A DECREASE IN ACCELERATION OR RPMS, RATHER THE CAR CONTINUES TO INCREASE AT A FAST SPEED AS THOUGH THE CAR WAS BEING PULLED; 4) TURNING THE CAR OFF ALONE SOMETIMES DOES NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE AS UPON NEXT START OF THE ENGINE THE RPMS WILL IMMEDIATELY JUMP TO 6000-8000; 5) THIS ISSUE OCCURS WITH AND WITHOUT THE FLOORMATS; 6) THE ISSUE OCCURS MOST FREQUENTLY AT START UP AND OFTEN RESOLVES ITSELF AFTER A COUPLE DANGEROUS AND SCARY MINUTES OF MONITORING THE ACCELERATION AND RPMS IN RESPONSE YOUR TOGGLING OF THE GAS PEDAL; 7) THE ISSUE WAS NOTICED INITIALLY AT ROUGHLY 90,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND OCCURS ABOUT 3-5 TIMES A MONTH; 8) I LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
IN MAY 2014 WHILE UTILIZING THE CRUISE CONTROL,APPLYING THE BRAKES DID NOT DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL EVEN WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS BRAKING TO DECREASE SPEED AS WE WERE ENTERING BASTROP, TX ON HWY 71. IT TOOK US BY SURPRISE, AND MY HUSBAND FINALLY MANAGED TO BRING THE CAR UNDER CONTROL BY PRESSING THE CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGE BUTTON ON THE STEERING WHEEL. I TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR, AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. ON SUNDAY, NOV. 27, 2016, WE WERE USING THE CRUISE CONTROL WHILE WE WERE TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON HWY 79 APPROACHING HEARNE, TX. THE CAR IN FRONT OF US SLOWED, AND MY HUSBAND BRAKED TO SLOW DOWN AS WELL, BUT IT SEEMED THAT THE CAR ACTUALLY SPED UP. HE LOOKED DOWN TO BE SURE THAT HE HIT THE BRAKE AND NOT THE ACCELERATOR. BY THE TIME HE LOOKED UP, WE WERE ABOUT TO HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US. HE HIT THE BRAKES HARDER, AND THE CAR SEEMED TO SPEED UP AGAIN. MY HUSBAND SWERVED TO THE LEFT TO AVOID HITTING CAR IN FRONT OF US, BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER VEHICLE NEXT TO US IN THE LANE TO OUR LEFT. FORTUNATELY, THE DRIVERS OF THE OTHER VEHICLES MANAGED TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT AND TO THE LEFT SO THAT WE HAD ROOM TO PASS BETWEEN THE TWO VEHICLES. OUR BRAKES WERE SQUEALING, BUT THE CAR WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN. FINALLY MY HUSBAND MANAGED TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL AND PULLED OFF THE ROAD SO THAT WE COULD COLLECT OUR COMPOSURE. I RETURNED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER IN ROUND ROCK ON NOVEMBER 29. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, SO I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE ISSUE FIXED. I KNOW THAT HYUNDAI AND KIA HAVE HAD RECALLS FOR DEFECTIVE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCHES ON OTHER MODELS, MODEL YEARS, AND I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF THE SAME TYPE ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE. IT IS TRULY A SAFETY ISSUE, AND I THINK THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD FIX THIS AGAIN ON MY VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE.
WHEN ACCELERATING, THE ENGINE DOES NOT ALWAYS DE-ACCELERATE WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS RELEASED. THIS IS SPORADIC AND UNPREDICTABLE. OUR MECHANIC THINKS IT IS A FAULT IN THE THROTTLE BODY. IT IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE AFTER ACCELERATING THE CAR WILL CONTINUE TO ACCELERATE FOR UP TO 10 SECONDS AFTER MY FOOT IS OFF THE GAS PEDAL. OR BETWEEN SHIFTS (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) THE RPM WILL GO DANGEROUSLY HIGH BECAUSE THE CLUTCH IS PUSHED IN AND BRIEFLY NO LOAD ON THE ENGINE. THE CAR DOES NOT NEED TO BE MOVING FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. IT IS A THROTTLE CONTROL ISSUE, AS DETERMINED BY OUR MECHANIC. IT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE LAST YEAR. *TR
WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT OF A DRUG STORE FOR MAYBE 10 MINUTES. STARTED THE CAR AND BACKED OUT OF PARKING SPACE. WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE TO GO FORWARD THE CAR ACCELERATED TO A VERY HIGH SPEED AND RAN INTO TWO PARKED CARS. WITH HELP I TRIED TO BACK OUT OF THE SPACE BUT WHEN I WENT FORWARD THE CAR ONCE AGAIN ACCELERATED TO A HIGH SPEED DAMAGING MY CAR AND THE TWO OTHER CARS. SEVERAL YEARS BACK I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT TO MAIL A LETTER. WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, THE CAR ACCELERATED AT A HIGH SPEED AND BACKED INTO A SNOW BANK. I THOUGHT AT THE TIME THAT I HAD ACCIDENTALLY STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR INSTEAD OF THE BREAK BUT READ THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE FROM A HYUNDAI OWNER.
WHEN DRIVING IT IS DIFFICULT AT TIME TO REGULATE MY SPEED. IF I STOP AT A RED LIGHT AND THEN TRY TO DRIVE ON A GREEN LIGHT MY CAR WILL JOLT FORWARD. IT IS HARD TO SPEED UP, IT FEELS LIKE MY CAR IS STUCK IN ON SPEED. IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY AS IT IS SLOW TO PICK UP SPEED.
DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON NARROW 2 LANE ROAD.,MY CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND SHOT ACROSS THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF ONCOMING LANE..THANKFULLY NO CAR WAS COMING TOWARD ME.AT THE TIME. I MANAGED TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL, BUT WAS TERRIFIED THINKING WHAT IF A CAR HAD BEEN COMING UP TOWARD ME. THIS HAPPENED SOMETIME IN SUMMER OF 2013. I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS JUST A FLUKE UNTIL TODAY WHEN I WAS READING ABOUT CHRYSLER AUTOS HAVING SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. I DECIDED TO CHECK TO SEE IF ANY HYUNDAI CARS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT INDEED THERE HAD BEEN A CASE REPORTED. NOW, I AM VERY UNEASY DRIVING MY CAR, AND ESPECIALLY SINCE MY 19 YR OLD ALSO DRIVES IT. I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY RECALL TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED. I HAVE ALSO EMAIL THE HYUNDAI CORP. TO INFORM THEM ALSO OF MY EXPERIENCE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCLERATED AND CRASHED INTO A LIGHT POLE. THE CONTACT WAS SEVERELY INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
I WAS TURNING FROM GAS STATION ONTO ROAD, CROSSING 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC WHEN VEHICLE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND I WAS NEARLY BROAD-SIDED. ALL DASH LIGHTS CAME ON, AND AC AND RADIO WERE ON, BUT ENGINE HAD STALLED. AFTER CALLING HYUNDAI USA I TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP, REPORTED AS STALLING AT LOW SPEED AND ROUGH IDLE. HYUNDAI USA REPRESENTATIVE SAID NO PROBLEMS LIKE THIS REPORTED. ALSO SERVICE ADVISER REPORTED NEVER HEARING OF THE PROBLEM WHEN TOOK INTO DEALERSHIP, DESPITE NUMEROUS REPORTS I HAD PRINTED OFF THE INTERNET. IN FACT SAID "WE DON'T ACKNOWLEDGE INTERNET REPORTS AS BEING VALID". *JS
