2018 Honda Pilot Engine Problems

COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. Driving normally - no warning - vehicle shut down - dash warning lights went on after shut down. Fortunately, vehicle was through the intersection and on a side street - or this would have been a fatal accident.

I was driving on the highway, and the sensor stating the transmission is too hot popped up on the dashboard. This is an issue I have brought to Honda's attention on a few other occasions over the past three years, as this light has shown up before, but only when the outside temperatures had exceeded 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and I was driving at speeds of 55mph or more.

Removed and replaced connecting rod bearings after engine knock noted and confirmed at Honda dealership during unrelated maintenance work. The mechanic noted wear and scoring on the connecting rod bearings and the engine knock went away after replacement. This could've resulted in catastrophic engine failure and loss of control while driving if unaddressed.

Misfire code cylinder 4 injector

On [XXX] as I was driving northbound on the [XXX] in California going the speed limit there was a sudden loud crash coming from the engine block. After the loud crash, there was a dramatic drop in engine power causing the car to drastically lose speed.

Dear Sir/Madam, My Vehicle stalls and stutters suddenly when driving. It does not accelerate the way it should. Engine light is on.

While driving at interstate speeds, without any warning that there was an issue, engine began to run very rough and all warning indicators on the display were active, car slowed and had to pull off onto the road shoulder, very lucky the traffic was lite and was already in the right traffic lane, was able to pull onto the road shoulder quickly.

Extreme vibration from the high pressure fuel line due to premature failure of the high pressure fuel pump. Was told that I need to replace everything going to the high pressure fuel pump when I replace the pump because of the risk of fire.

On 8/15/22 I was driving my honda pilot. I came to a stop and when I proceeded to accelerate the car got stuck in low gear and would not pick up speed. It made a strange sound and I could feel a hard bang and it kept getting stuck in low gear.

On September 27, 2022 the vehicle start/stop failed at Georgetown Texas highway 195/I35 overpass stop light. When the light changed the vehicle started to move forward then stalled in the left lane. "Idle Stop System" fails to successfully restart the engine and results in a stall. Safety is put at risk as the car becomes immobilized at a traffic intersection, red lights, middle of the highway. Anywhere that you came to a complete stop and were not able to get the vehicle to reengage.

The auto engine idle feature engaged at a stop light as usual. When I moved my foot from the brake to the accelerator, the car shut off, shifted into neutral and would not start. This was on a major highway.

The vehicle would "stall out" at a stop light or stop sign when I was in "auto idle-stop" and pressed on the gas. I first noticed that the auto idle-stop was hesitating when it would start up. I also noticed that the radio would "cut out".

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 116,744.

While driving, the vehicle just stopped. Tried to navigate to get to side of the road, but ended up stuck in the middle of the lane, in the middle of the road. My pilot also has some sort of lock, so I could not put it in neutral to be pushed out of oncoming traffic.

On October 3, 2025, our 2018 Honda Pilot was being driven a short distance locally when all ability for acceleration was lost. Fortunately the driver was able to navigate off the road safely. The auto shop that checked the engine determined that it had seized up.

Although I had the Honda taken in for the prior auto stop/start engine recall. The software fix has not solved the issue.

My timing belt tensioner is making a ticking noise and while taking it to a mechanic he says it should be taken to the dealership and be replaced as well as the timing belt. I believe my vehicle should be included in the recall opened in 2019 for the timing belt inspection safety recall.

This vehicle is subject to NHTSA Recall Number 23V-858. Four months after the recall announcement, our local Honda dealer does not have parts to perform the recall service nor has an ETA when they will have parts.

P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or stuck off. This is one of hundreds of Honda's between the years 2016-2019 that have this same issue, which renders the car undriveable as the torque converter cannot transfer fluid to the transmission from the engine.

I have been experiencing issues with the auto engine idle stop feature. The electrical system (radio & blue tooth) cut off and on when the auto engine idle stop tries to start again. There have even been several instances of the car cutting off completely and having to be restarted.

Camshaft sensor failed. Car is not even 7 years old. I was told this issue is known in the Honda ridgelines.

Recall needs addressed. Car is throwing codes and serging going down the road.

Emission system problem warning sign come and go

The engine failed to restart after the auto idle function engaged at a stop light at a busy intersection. The car shut down, including turning off the tv screens and the a/c etc. and the dash instructed us to put the car in park (it had switched itself into neutral at that point).

When I came to a stop sign the car died and would not start for several minutes, causing traffic to back up and a dangerous situation at a busy 4 way stop. This has happened on multiple occasions when the auto stop feature is not disabled.

Emissions system problem

On several occasions so far, when stopped with the idle stop system engaged, the brake depressed and at a full stop, the engine shut down, as expected, but failed to restart once the brake pedal was released.

When driving and slowing down or stopping at stop to which the auto/off engages, the vehicle turns all the way off. I cannot move the car and have to try several times to power the vehicle down and disengage the auto off function. It has happened several times and I just took it to Gillman Honda where they said it is probably just the battery but my battery has been fine.

The auto off/on is dangerous. Multiple time the car does not turn back on and everything turns off. A few times the car started to roll backwards, when on a hill and I took my foot of the break.

The engine stop feature did not allow the car to restart at multiple stops. I was not able to immediately restart the car. It did restart after some time.

I was on a six lane highway at a traffic light. The idle stop engaged while I was sitting for the light to turn green. I released the break and the car didn’t start.

Sitting at stoplight with the auto start on (turns off at light to save emissions). light turned green took foot off brake, the car died, had to push the start button a few times before car would turn back on. This has happened to us twice.

We are original owners of the vehicle. At busy intersections, including when in the middle of the intersection for a left turn, the car has shot off with the auto-off feature. Upon removing our foot from the brake the truck shut off completely (engine should have restarted).

Engine unable to restart after stopping at traffic light. When Auto Engine is enabled I have faced this problem multiple times and it was unable to restart. Traffic backed up because I could not go forward.

While stopped at a red light and stopped at a 4-way intersection my 2018 Honda Pilot turned completely off. It was not in engine idle mode. A message flashed up on my dash saying to put my car in park.

I was at the red light stop, when I got green light, I moved my feet off of brake, engine did not wake up or restart. I pushed gas pedal but the car would not move, then it showed all kinds of lights on dashboard. Afterwards, the car showed a sign asking to shift into parking, which I did.

2018 honda pilot. Consumer writes in regards to MPG issue. The consumer stated there was a discrepancy between the MPG displayed on the vehicle versus the actual MPG.

The engine automatic idle stop malfunctions on a regular basis. At idle, the engine will stop and is supposed to re-start automatically and on average once per week the engine will not re-start. The car will need to be put into park and then manually restarted.

The engine failed to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light on three separate occasions with the Auto Start/Stop function engaged.

I was driving my kids to school when I stopped at the school intersection. I go to press on the accelerator as I normally would and it would not drive, so I pressed on it a little harder as I was turning left since there were cars approaching. My vehicle suddenly jolted, making myself and the kids shift/jump from the force.

When my vehicle has the auto idle stop feature turned on, there are several times when I have been sitting at a stop light or in a median waiting to pull across or merge into traffic, and this feature engages and when you take your foot off the brake and the engine is supposed to auto restart, the engine stops completely instead and shifts itself into neutral which requires you to have to put vehicle in park and completely restart the whole car.
