TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. WHEN THE ENGINE WAS STARTED, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK AND A STRONG FUEL FUMES EMITTED AROUND THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.
TL - THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL FUMES WERE EMITTING IN AND AROUND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS FUEL LEAK AND THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 165,000. PM
NOTED EXCESSIVE SMELL OF GASOLINE IN AND IMMEDIATELY OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE, AND LATER DETERMINED GASOLINE MILEAGE HAD DROPPED DRAMATICALLY FROM 30+ MPG TO 18 MPG. UPON SECURING THE FIRST AVAILABLE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK FROM MY LOCAL MECHANIC IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS "FUEL LEAKING FROM THE TOP AREA OF FUEL TANK, BUT MANY ITEMS WOULD HAVE TO BE MOVED OUT OF THE WAY TO LOWER THE FUEL TANK TO MAKE A MORE SPECIFIC LOCATION OF THE SITE AND CAUSE OF THE LEAK, WHICH WOULD BE LABOR INTENSIVE AND COSTLY BECAUSE THE ENTIRE REAR CRADLE WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED WITH THE DANGER THAT OLD RUSTING BOLTS WOULD BREAK AND MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO BE REPLACED. POSSIBLE ITEMS THAT MIGHT NEED TO BE REPLACED, INCLUDE THE FUEL TANK, FUEL FILLER NECK AND FUEL PUMP." *TR
I HAVE HAD SO MANY CORROSION ISSUES WITH THIS CAR, IT IS STRUCTURALLY DANGEROUS. THE CAR HAS 160,000 MILES ON IT BUT HAS BEEN KEPT IN A GARAGE AND HAS HAD THE UNDER CARRIAGE FREQUENTLY WASHED SINCE I LIVE IN THE NORTHEASTERN US. IN THE LAST 2 YEARS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE BRAKE AND GAS LINES DO TO CORROSION. THE GAS LINE RUPTURED DURING A DRIVE. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE GAS TANK RUSTED THROUGH AND WAS REPLACED. IT WAS LEAKING FOR SOME TIME. THE LEAK WAS NEAR THE HALF WAY MARK AND ONLY LEAKED WHEN OVER HALF FULL AND DURING DRIVING OR GOING UP HILL. FORTUNATELY WE DID NOT HAVE A FIRE. I JUST FOUND OUT THE FRONT SUB FRAME IS COMPLETELY ROTTED OUT AND WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION THIS YEAR. BODY RUST IS MINIMAL AND NORMAL FOR AGE AND THE NORTHEAST WINTERS. THE CLEAR COAT IS PEALING OFF EVERYWHERE. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH MY FIRST AND PROBABLY ONLY HONDA. LOOKING BACK, I AM VERY LUCKY THAT THE CAR DIDN'T CATCH FIRE AND KILL SOMEONE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 50 MPH WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE SMELL OF FUEL EMITTED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 119,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
1998 HONDA ACCORD SHUTS OFF BY ITSELF WHILE DRIVING. HAPPENS SPORADICALLY. REPLACED FUEL PUMP, FUEL IGNITER, CAP, ROTOR, PLUGS, WIRES, ETC. NOTHING FIXED IT. NOW THEY SAY IT MIGHT BE THE IGNITION SWITCH. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS IN 2002 BUT MY VIN DOESN'T COME UP AS PART OF THAT RECALL SO I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT REPLACED. AND THAT MAY NOT FIX IT EITHER. *TR
THROTTLE BODY PULLEY. THE PULLEY FOR THE THROTTLE USES TWO CABLES, EACH ANCHORED IN THE PULLEYS. THE ANCHORING AREA FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAS BROKEN, POSSIBLY FROM CORROSION. THE SAME MATERIAL AND ASSEMBLY ALSO IS FOR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, SO THIS BREAK IN THE PULLEY COULD ALSO MEAN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD NOT WORK. BROKEN PART IS THE THROTTLE BODY PULLEY.
MY CAR STARTED LEAKING GAS. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT AND HAS HAD ALL OF ITS SERVICE, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE GAS TANK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND HAD RUSTED THROUGH. THIS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR A 10-YEAR OLD, DEALER MAINTAINED CAR THAT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. BUT HONDA COULD PROVIDE NO OTHER REASON FOR THE TANK TO HAVE BEGUN LEAKING. *TR
I BOUGHY MY 98 HONDA ACCORD WITH 87000 MILES. 1 YEAR LATER WITH LESS THAN 100000 MILES MY TRANSMISSION WENT COMPLETLY OUT. IT WAS $3000 TO FIX. 2 YEARS LATER WITH ONLY 140000 MILES MY TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AGAIN. $3000 TO FIX. IT NOW HAS 170000 MILES AND IS STARTING TO SLIP. IT ALSO STALLS WITH NO WARNING. IT HAS STALLED MANY TIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. HONDA REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH 1 MONTH AGO AND SINCE IT HAS CONTINUED TO STALL. HONDA WILL NO LONGER FIX IT. *NM
FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT FAILED 4 TIMES: 12/98, 12/99, 8/00 AND 4/03. AMERICAN HONDA WOULD NOT ADMIT THAT THERE IS A GENERIC DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT. DID NOT OFFER TO REPLACE THE 4TH FAILED SENDING UNIT FREE OF CHARGE. *NLM

FUEL GAUGE WAS NOT REGISTERING THE PROPER AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE FUEL TANK. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THIS PART WAS NOT COVERED UNDER A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL, AND REPAIRS WOULD BE MADE AT CONSUMER EXPENSE. *AK

UPON SHIFTING VEHICLE FROM PARK TO REVERSE ON FLAT SURFACE WITH FOOT DEPRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, RUNNING INTO A FENCE/TRASH CANS, AND A STREET SIGN EFORE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. ALSO,GAS TANK HOSE WAS PUNCTURED, CAUSING A FUEL LEAK. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
