Your 2017 Ford Focus has a transmission problem where it struggles to shift into 1st and 2nd gears — the engine revs up when you're stopped but the car doesn't accelerate right away. You've had multiple repairs including a new lower actuator, radiator fan, and clutch work, plus the transmission control module reprogrammed, but the problem persists. Several mechanics have suggested replacing the entire transmission as the best solution, though Ford has declined to service it under recall or warranty.

Your car jerks or bucks when accelerating in first and second gear, but the problem goes away once you reach third gear. You've noticed this since purchasing the car, and a friend who drove it confirmed the same issue. This may require a transmission inspection or adjustment to diagnose whether it's a shifting problem or engine-related concern.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your 2017 Focus's 2.0L Ecoboost engine developed a cracked cylinder head, which caused severe smoking that could have led to a fire. The aluminum cylinder head has thin walls between the combustion chamber and coolant passages that can't handle the extreme heat cycles from the turbocharger, causing micro-fractures that eventually crack. A Ford dealership confirmed this is the problem, and the repair requires a complete engine replacement costing around $12,000.

Your engine oil warning light came on while driving on the highway in fall 2024, along with a severe loss of power. After changing the oil and filter, then replacing the oil pressure switch, the warning persisted. A mechanic later discovered that the oil pump belt and timing belt were severely worn and had clogged the oil screen, restricting oil flow. Even after the belts were replaced and the screen cleaned, your engine seized several months later due to the damage caused by the earlier loss of oil pressure.

Your engine died while driving in traffic, leaving you stranded on a busy road. A mechanic found that the oil pump pickup tube was clogged with debris from a broken oil pump or timing chain pulley, which caused the engine to seize. The repair will likely involve replacing the oil pump, cleaning or replacing the pickup tube, and inspecting the timing chain system for damage.

After your engine was replaced under recall, your car began sputtering and losing power while driving on the freeway, even though the engine RPMs were increasing. The check engine light came on briefly, creating a serious safety hazard since you couldn't maintain speed in traffic. Diagnostic testing found misfires in cylinders 1 and 2, carbon buildup on the spark plugs and ignition coils, a broken ignition coil connector on cylinder 3, and a broken motor mount. The dealer may need to replace the ignition coils, spark plugs, ignition coil connectors, and motor mount.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your 2017 Focus has repeatedly lost engine power while driving at various speeds without warning lights showing up, though the temperature gauge moves into the hot zone as the vehicle slows down. The engine compartment gets significantly hot after just a short drive. You've taken it to the dealer multiple times and had it towed, and even after a recall repair related to engine cooling was completed, the problem happened again. The issue likely involves a cooling system malfunction that causes the engine to overheat and shut down, requiring a thorough diagnosis and repair of the cooling system components.

Your 2017 Ford Focus's dual-clutch transmission is experiencing shuddering, jerking, hesitation, and unpredictable acceleration—especially in stop-and-go traffic and when starting from a stop. Even after clutch replacement, these problems persist, making it unsafe to enter intersections or merge into traffic. Your mechanic has indicated further repairs may not help due to what appears to be a systemic transmission design issue. Addressing this may require transmission fluid service, clutch replacement, transmission reprogramming, or potentially a complete transmission rebuild or replacement.

Filed: Oct 2025

Your car was recalled in December 2024 for a faulty canister purge valve, which you had replaced in April 2025. After the repair, your car continued to stall and act like it was running out of gas even with a full tank, especially at highway speeds — this created a dangerous jerking and sudden slowdown that could have caused an accident. The dealership discovered the fuel tank was collapsing, likely caused by the original valve malfunction, but Ford refused to cover the $2,600 tank replacement under the recall. Fixing this issue will require replacing the fuel tank and related components to restore proper fuel system function.

After having recall work done on your purge valve in January 2025, your car experienced a loud bang on the highway in October that damaged the undercarriage dust cover and grill trim. Shortly after, your oil warning light began flickering intermittently. More recently, your instrument cluster display has become unreliable and hard to read, and your car is now having trouble shifting into reverse and second gear while feeling sluggish and underpowered. Your dealer and a diagnostic test have identified a faulty CO2 sensor module as the likely cause of the check engine light and transmission issues. The repair will involve replacing the CO2 module and possibly other emissions-related components.

You were told by Valley Ford of Columbus, Ohio that a safety-related part was in stock, so you made two separate trips to the dealership and took time off work. Both times, you were told upon arrival that the part was not actually available. You continued driving your vehicle without this safety repair for an extended period, and when you contacted another dealership (Germain Ford), you learned the part could take up to eight weeks to obtain. The repeated misinformation delayed your ability to complete a needed safety repair and kept you driving in a potentially unsafe condition. Resolving this issue will require obtaining the unavailable safety-related part and having it installed at a dealership.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2017 Ford Focus is experiencing transmission problems that started around 50,000 miles. When stopped at traffic lights or driving at highway speeds, your transmission makes abnormal sounds, jerks, downshifts unexpectedly, and sometimes enters limp mode where power is limited. Your check engine light is on, and a diagnostic test suggested a transmission clutch issue. Additionally, your cooling fan isn't working reliably—it turns on by itself sometimes but fails to turn on when needed, causing the engine to overheat. A cooling system replacement and sensor replacement didn't resolve the transmission problem. Fixing this will likely require a transmission rebuild or replacement, and a thorough diagnostic of the cooling fan system.
