While your sister was driving your 2006 Ford Focus on the highway, the driver's side airbag deployed unexpectedly without any crash occurring. The airbag released white powder and impacted her head, causing her to temporarily lose vision. She was able to safely pull over, but she was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with head trauma, concussion, and whiplash. She continues to experience ongoing symptoms including headaches, foggy thinking, dizziness, and pain in her arm and leg. The repair will likely require replacing the airbag system, which may result in the vehicle being declared a total loss given its age and model.

You received a recall notice about your airbags, likely related to a Takata defect. You're concerned about your safety and your family's safety because of potential airbag issues. This recall suggests your airbags may not deploy properly in a crash or could deploy unexpectedly.

Your airbag warning light turns on when you start the engine and stays on, even though your car has never been in a major accident—only a minor sideswipe that scratched the bumper. You've checked under the front seats for debris and cycled the seat belts as instructed, but the light won't turn off. This likely indicates a problem with the airbag system's sensors or wiring that will need to be diagnosed with a scanner tool.

Your transmission shifter won't lock into gear even though the clutch engages and the shifter moves into position. When inspected, rubber and plastic clips from the shift linkage were found broken and had fallen on top of the transmission. This repair will likely involve replacing the damaged shift linkage clips and possibly the entire linkage assembly.

Your driver's side outside door handle broke because the internal mechanism is made of plastic. The handle keeps breaking even after repair attempts, and you're unable to get your car inspected as a result. You may need to replace the entire door handle assembly with a more durable unit.

Your car key stopped working and your car won't start. When you tried to start the engine, a car and lock symbol flashed on your dashboard and nothing you tried would get it to start, leaving you stranded at a gas station. The issue likely involves your key's electronic chip or your car's ignition system, and may require a new key, ignition switch repair, or reprogramming of your vehicle's security system.

Power Train,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2023

While driving on the highway, your transmission suddenly shifted gears on its own and then refused to shift normally afterward. Even after trying multiple times, it wouldn't respond to gear changes, leaving you and your granddaughter stranded in a dangerous highway situation. A mechanic found the problem was a defective shifting linkage, and this issue has happened more than once.

NHTSA #: 11546095
Suspension1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: Jan 2023

The welded metal retainer holding the front suspension bushing on your right lower control arm rusted through, causing the control arm to separate from the frame and your right front wheel to turn outward unexpectedly while driving straight. This also caused the driveshaft to pull away from the transmission. The thinner welded retainer rusted out while the thicker forged arm itself remained intact, suggesting a design vulnerability in salt-heavy climates like the Northeast.

criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2019

Your car unexpectedly accelerated on its own while driving, and when you applied the brakes, the engine RPMs spiked dramatically. The problem turned out to be two issues: a broken cruise control module cable that caused the throttle to stick, and a broken breather hose connected to the air intake that also caused the engine to stall while driving. Replacing the cruise control cable, breather hose, and oxygen sensor should resolve both problems.

Wheels1 issue
criticalWHEELS
Filed: Jun 2019

Your new BF Goodrich front tires lose grip on wet roads—even in light drizzle—causing your car to slide and feel like you're driving on ice at speeds as low as 20 mph. You've had multiple near-accidents and one tire won't hold air pressure consistently due to a seating problem during installation. The tires haven't improved after a month of driving, while your rear General-brand tires grip normally in the same conditions.

Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Apr 2019

Your brakes failed while driving, causing your car to crash into a telephone pole. The airbags did not deploy during the crash. The exact cause of the brake failure was not determined. The repair will likely involve a complete brake system inspection to identify whether the failure was due to brake pads, rotors, master cylinder, brake lines, or another component.

NHTSA #: 11203719
Electrical System1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jul 2018

Your rear hatch wiring harness has frayed wires that are rubbing against the rubber boot covering it, which can create a fire hazard since these wires are always live and connected to all rear electrical components. This wiring problem may prevent your rear hatch from opening unless you unlock it manually with the key. The fix likely involves replacing the damaged wiring harness and ensuring proper protection around the rear hatch electrical connections.

CrashFiled: May 2018

Your 2006 Ford Focus has stalled and stopped running multiple times while driving, starting the day you purchased it and continuing through at least May 2018. When the stalling occurs, all dashboard warning lights illuminate. A dealer inspection found nothing wrong and suggested replacing the vehicle's computer, but the problem persisted. You were involved in a crash in October 2017 that you believe may have been related to electrical or brake issues. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the electrical system, engine control computer, or fuel system components causing the stalling.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Oct 2020

Your car's wiring harness flexes where it connects the body to the tailgate, causing the insulation to break and the wiring to short against the metal body. This blows the rear lights fuse and leaves you without any rear lighting, which can happen while you're driving or just opening the hatchback. The fix would involve replacing the wiring harness or routing it with better protection to prevent the flexing and damage.

Your gas pedal occasionally gets stuck and won't push down fully, making it hard to accelerate. Additionally, your headlights and other lights flicker constantly when turned on at night, which has caused you to be pulled over. A shop inspection found no obvious problems, but the electrical and fuel system issues persist.

highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2020

When you try to fill your car's fuel tank, gasoline sprays back out of the fuel filler opening instead of going into the tank. The fuel leak happens every time you attempt to refuel. The dealer said your vehicle isn't covered under the relevant recall campaign. Fixing this likely involves inspecting or replacing the fuel filler neck, check valve, or related fuel system components that are preventing proper fuel flow into the tank.

Latches/locks/linkages1 issue
highLATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
Filed: Oct 2018

Your car's door latches are failing — the rear passenger and driver side doors won't stay latched, and your front driver's door can't be opened from outside the vehicle. An independent repair shop replaced the rear latches and found that the driver's door latch also needs replacement. The fix will involve replacing the faulty door latch mechanisms on the affected doors.

Your car's anti-theft system and manual transmission are experiencing issues. The anti-theft system may be preventing the car from starting or operating normally, while the transmission may have difficulty shifting or engaging gears.

Your car came without a cabin filter despite it being a feature some owners expected. The electric windows have never functioned properly since you owned the vehicle. Additionally, the airbag system was never inspected by the dealership during your ownership. Getting the windows repaired and requesting a professional airbag system inspection would be important steps to address these issues.

Your car's passenger back door latch broke, and the door had to be taped shut as a temporary fix. This means the door won't close or lock properly on its own.
