Your ABS warning light comes on and off, and when it does, your brakes lose most of their stopping power — requiring over 300 feet to stop from 45 mph instead of the normal distance. You hear a grinding noise from the engine bay when braking, and the problem may persist even after the car is turned off and left overnight. This brake failure has caused at least two accidents, including one where you rear-ended another vehicle at a traffic light despite pressing the brake pedal hard, and another where you had to steer into a median at 65 mph to avoid a collision. The brake system likely needs a complete inspection and repair of the ABS module, pump, or related hydraulic components.

Your car's theft alarm system goes off randomly without reason, and the theft warning light blinks when you turn the key to the run position. You're experiencing hard starting—sometimes there's no sound when you turn the key—and when the engine does start, it stalls unless you push the gas pedal almost to the floor. You also need to apply strong pressure on the brakes to stop the vehicle. You've already had the battery tested, the starter replaced, a new key purchased, and a new fob, but the problem persists.

THE ALARM GOES OFF AT ALL HOURS EVERY DAY FOR NO APPARENT REASON WHILE LOCKED & PARKED. THE DEALERSHIP HAD NO WAY TO FIX IT UNLESS THE HORN WAS DISARMED. I FEEL THAT IS UNSAFE TO HAVE NO HORN.
FOR YEARS MY ALARM GOES OFF RANDOMLY, DURING THE DAY TO ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT. WHEN I'M DRIVING THE CAR THE LIGHT INSIDE WILL GO ON AND OFF AND ON DASHBOARD WILL SAY DOOR AJAR. I'VE CALLED FORD, I'VE ASKED THE DEALER AND I'VE ASKED MECHANICS NOT WITH FORD. SINCE THE ALARM IS BUILT INTO ENGINE IT CAN NOT BE DISABLED. ONLY OPTION IS TO PULL HORN WIRE SO MY NEIGHBORS WILL NOT BE ANNOYED BY MY HORN AND ALARM SOUNDINGS AT ALL HOURS. I'VE RESEARCHED FOR YEARS HOW TO TRY TO FIX THIS ISSUE, I'VE CHANGED MY CAR BATTERY, I'VE CHANGED BATTERY IN REMOTE...NOTHING IS WORKING. NOW THE DEALER IS TELLING ME THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE LATCH. HAD MY CAR IN THERE MANY TIMES FOR DIFFERENT THINGS, BUT I REFUSE TO PAY 800. PER LATCH IN THE VEHICLE, SINCE THEY'RE NOT EVEN REALLY SURE IT'S A LATCH OR WHICH LATCH WOULD BE THE PROBLEM. WITHIN A MONTH OF PURCHASING VEHICLE, MILEAGE 67,000, COMPLETE BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL AND WILL BE IF NOT CORRECTED. MANY EXACT COMPLAINTS FOUND ONLINE. VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP COMING TO LIGHT. HAD TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD INTO A WOODED AREA FOR THE VEHICLE TO STOP. FELT LIKE VEHICLE WAS SLIDING ON ROAD. LATER REALIZED IT WAS A ABS SYSTEM FAILURE NOT SLIDING. ABS LIGHT IS ON. BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICE LIGHT ON. EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON. APPROXIMATELY 75% OF THE TIME, WHEN FIRST DRIVING VEHICLE, ONLY THE SERVICE BRAKE DISPLAY IS ON. THE VEHICLE WILL BEGIN TO BUCK/STUTTER, STEERING WHEEL SHAKES, AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES. AFTER ACCELERATING, THAT STOPS AND RETURNS TO WHAT I DESCRIBED.ABOVE. I READ SINCE THERE WERE NO FATALITIES REPORTED FORD WILL NOT RECALL. I AM CERTAIN THERE HAVE BEEN FATALITIES DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, JUST NOT IDENTIFIED.
WHITE PARKED WITH THE ALARM ON, THE ALARM GOES OFF FOR NO REASON & THE LIGHTS CONTINUE TO FLASH POSSIBLE RUNNING DOWN THE BATTERY. THIS HAPPENS ALMOST DAILY, EVEN MORE THAN ONCE A DAY WHILE AT WORK. SOMETIMES TOO FAR AWAY FOR ME TO HEAR THE ALARM.

ON 7/10/18, WHILE WAITING AT A STOP LIGHT TO ENTER A HIGHWAY, CAR STALLED/LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING. TWO MONTHS EARLIER IN MAY 2018, THE CAR ISSUED A "STOP SAFELY NOW" WARNING WHILE MOVING AT 65MPH. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN TIME BEFORE LOSING POWER. BOTH INSTANCES RESULTED IN RESTARTING THE CAR WITH NO ISSUES AFTER A PERIOD OF REST. MECHANIC ON BOTH OCCASIONS COULD NOT FIND AN ISSUE WITH BATTERY OR ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. WATER PUMP (RECALL) WAS ALREADY REPAIRED SEVERAL YEARS AGO IN 2012 AND HAD NO ISSUES WITH STALLING UNTIL 2018.

UPON INSPECTING UNDER THE HOOD, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE WAS EXTREMELY HOT TO THE TOUCH. MAC HAIK'S SOUTHWAY FORD (7979 INTERSTATE 35 ACCESS RD, SAN ANTONIO, TX 78224, (210) 922-2222) WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WAS NEEDED. THE CONTACT DECLINED DUE TO THE COST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,216.
VEHICLE STALLED WHILE MY WIFE AND TWO SMALL KIDS WERE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" STATEMENT POPPED UP ON THE DISPLAY. SHE MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER 10MIN. SHE WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE HOME. AT HOME VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STARTED AT ALL STILL WITH THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" WARNING ON. TOWED IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND GOT THE RECOMMENDATION OF A TECHNICIAN TO REPLACE THE DC DC CONVERTER. I APPROVED THE REPLACEMENT BUT VEHICLE STILL DOES NOT WANT TO START. A SUDDEN ENGINE STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS INACCEPTABLE WITH TWO SMALL KIDS AND A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I'D EXPECT FORD TO COVER ALL REPAIRS TO FIX THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE!

A B S BRAKES QUIT WORKING AFTER A HARD STOP IN A PARKING LOT TO AVOID HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE, AFTER THE FORD DEALERSHIP HAD THE ESCAPE FOR4 MONTHS AND IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTOR WITH A RESULT OF REPLACING THEMASTER CYLINDER, TRAVEL SENSORAND NUMEROUS CONTAINERS OF BRAKE FLUID THEY WERE STILL UNABLE TO GET ANY BRAKES. AT THIS POINT THE MANUFACTOR DECIDED IT NEEDED A A B S MODULE, TOTAL PARTS ONLY WERE TOTALLING OVER $6000.00. IT IS A 2007 YEAR MODEL WITH ONLY 115000 MILES RAN AND LOOK GREAT. AFTER RESERCH ON LINE I SAW I WAS NOT THE ONLY PERSON WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. I THINK FORD SHOULD HAVE A RECALL BECAUSE THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE.
DOOR AJAR ACTIVATES CONSTANTLY SETTING OFF THE CAR ALARM AND KILLING THE CAR BATTERY. THIS HAPPENS WHILE CAR IS SITTING STATIONARY, AND OR MOVING (WHILE DRIVING) THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE DAY THE CAR WAS PURCHASED IN 4-2007, AND IT HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN, AND IS HAPPENING UP TO THE DAY THIS WAS SUBMITTED (8-25-2016. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS CAR AND FORD...YET NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. YOU SAY IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT IF YOU GO TO FORD OR A DEALER TO HAVE THE ALARM AND DOOR SWITCH DISCONNECTED THEY SAY THEY CANT DUE TO A SAFETY ISSUE.

HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

PICKED UP MY CAR FROM DEALERSHIP, (RECALLED) ELECTRONIC COOLANT PUMP REPLACED. HAVING DEALT WITH THE "STALL-LIKE CONDITION" DESCRIBED IN THE SAFETY RECALL NOTICE 14S19 / NHTSA RECALL 14V-526, I WAS EXPECTING THE NEWLY INSTALLED WATER PUMP TO AFFECT MY CAR'S RECENT PERFORMANCE. FIFTEEN MINUTES FROM THE DEALERSHIP, GOING 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, THE PULL OVER SAFELY NOW MESSAGE FLASHED. AND THEN MY CAR STALLED. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND MANEUVER THE KEY FROM THE OFF TO ON POSITION FREQUENTLY IN ORDER TO MOVE THE KEY AND START THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT BECAME STUCK MULTIPLE TIMES. THE BELT HAD TO BE ADJUSTED TO GET OUT OF THE SEAT BELT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES ON THE FREEWAY, A "STOP SAFELY NOW" MESSAGE CAME UP (WITHOUT ANY OTHER WARNING) AND OUR CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER AND SPEED IMMEDIATELY. I WAS IN THE CARPOOL LANE AND THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC ON THE 210 FREEWAY WAS AROUND 70 MPH. I HAD TO CUT ACROSS 4 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND WAS BARELY ABLE TO MAKE IT BEFORE MY CAR LOST POWER COMPLETELY. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MY HUSBAND OR I IN THE PAST YEAR. (EACH SITUATION WAS SIMILAR TO THIS ONE?AND EQUALLY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THERE IS ZERO WARNING). THE CAR STARTED UP AGAIN IMMEDIATELY AND I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE FREEWAY BEFORE IT HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER ON SIDE STREETS. I BELIEVE THIS IS RELATED TO THE HYBRID COOLANT PUMP DEFECT THAT I HAVE SEEN OTHERS WRITING ABOUT ONLINE?ALL OF THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ENGINE FAILURE ARE SIMILAR. I WAS DRIVING ALONG A FAIRLY BUSY HIGHWAY IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE ENGINE ALL OF SUDDEN STOPPED AND THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IN BUSY TRAFFIC. LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER AND WAITED FOR THE CAR TO COOL. IT RESTARTED AND THEN AGAIN DID THE SAME THING SEVERAL MILES DOWN THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN ON 19 JULY 2014 ALONG SMALL TOWN ROAD NOT FAR FROM HOME. THE CAR WAS BARELY WARM. WE HAD REPLACED THE BATTERY PACK AIR FILTER ON 17 JULY 2014, THINKING THAT THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THERE IS 'STOP SAFELY NOW 'MESSAGE THAT APPEARS JUST BEFORE IT SUDDENLY STOPS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THIS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY FROM THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA TO THE CITY OF SANTEE ON INTERSTATE 5 GOING NORTH AT 65 MPH WHEN THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 2007 SUDDENLY SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD SAYING, "SAFELY PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD". FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC WAS NOT HEAVY AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE EMERGENCY LANE UNTIL HELP COULD ARRIVE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT. *TR
WE TOOK OUR 2007 FORD ESCAPE (APROX 60,000 MILES) ON A ROAD TRIP FROM OMAHA NE TO ST. LOUIS MO ON 3/10/13 AND ARRIVED WITH NO ISSUES. ON OUR RETURN TRIP WE DROVE ABOUT 100 MILES UNTIL THE CAR STOPPED ON THE INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. WE WERE ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER SAFELY BUT WERE UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. WE HAD AAA TOW THE VEHICLE ABOUT 30 MILES TO THE CLOSEST TOWN AND AAA APPROVED MECHANIC. WHEN THE MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE THEY DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BURNED THROUGH ALL OF THE OIL AND WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SEIZE UP. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING LOW OIL UP UNTIL THIS POINT. I HAD RECENTLY HAD MY OIL CHANGED ABOUT 8 WEEK AND LESS THAN 1000 MILES PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT AND THERE WERE NO LEAKS SO IT SEEMS VERY IMPROBABLY THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE USED 4 QTS OF OIL IN THAT TIME. I CONTACTED FORD AND THE VEHICLE IS JUST OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THEY ARE UNWILLING TO ASSIST. IN MY RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS VEHICLE AT ABOUT 60-70K MILES AND MAY WARRANT ADDITIONAL RESEARCH. I AM CURRENTLY ATTEMPTING TO GET MY VEHICLE TRANSPORTED THE 350 MILES HOME TO GET A SECOND OPINION AND REPAIRED. THE CURRENT ESTIMATES I RECEIVED FOR REPAIR ARE BETWEEN $3,500-6,000. TRUCK WAS PUT ON A TRAILER AND BROUGHT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. THREE CODES WERE PRESENT, ONE BEING P0A27. FORD'S "FIX" IS TO INSTALL A SERVICE HARNESS AND FLASH THE BCM. ( SEE FORD'S CSP 07B48 AND LATER TSB 09-18-6) ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NEVER A RECALL, "SOME 2007-2007 ESCAPE HYBRID VEHICLES BUILT FROM 10-13-2003 TO 12-19-2006" MAY EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO FORD, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ONE OF THE AFFECTED ONES, YET IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME RESOLUTION ACCORDING TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. I HAVE THIS 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID WITH 50,000 MILES ON IT. IT WORKED FINE UNTIL THIS YEAR WHEN THE CAR WOULD TURN OFF AT THE LIGHT STOP AFTER A MESSAGE OF "STOP SAFELY NOW" DISPLAYED ON BOARD. I HAD TO PUT IT IN PARKING AND TURN ON THE ENGINE BEFORE I WOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. TOOK THE VEHICLE FOR A CHECK UP AND IT TURNED OUT THAT A SMALL STONE MAD A SMALL HOLE IN THE RADIATOR. WE FIXED THE PROBLEM AND IT SEEMED TO WORK WELL UNTIL 3 MONTHS LATER WHEN IT BEGAN TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, ONLY THIS TIME THE DISPLAY SHOWED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I ONLY HAVE A FEW SECONDS TO FIND A WAY TO STOP SAFELY BEFORE THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF AFTER THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" MESSAGE. IT IS SCARY SINCE IT HAPPENS EVERY FEW MILES NOW. WE SWITCHED TO DIFFERENT GAS BRANDS, MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE, CHANGED THE OIL AND FILTER ON TIME. THE OWNER'S MANUAL MENTIONS THAT THE STOP SAFELY NOW MESSAGE COULD BE AN INDICATION OF HYBRID COMPONENTS FAILURE. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND READ FORUM DISCUSSIONS AND I FOUND OUT THAT MANY ESCAPE HYBRID OWNERS REPORT THE SAME PROBLEM. IT LOOKS LIKE A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT TO ME. IT IS TOO COMMON TO BE JUST AN ISOLATED PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. YESTERDAY WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, OUR 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS IN THE BACK PASSENGER SEAT AND SHE REPORTED FEELING UNSAFE AND SCARED. WE WERE DRIVING FROM WINDSOR TO CHATHAM AND DURING THE 70 MILES DRIVE ALONE, MY DAUGHTER COUNTED 7 OCCURRENCES. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR ANYMORE. 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. DRIVING ABOUT 35 MILES OUTSIDE THE CITY GOING 65 MPH. CAR SUDDENLY SHUTS OFF AND SAYS "STOP SAFELY NOW". I LOSE ACCELERATION AND ALL I CAN DO IS BREAK AND PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TURN OFF MY CAR, RESTART IT AND IT WORKS AGAIN. IT HAPPENED 3 OTHER TIMES THAT DAY. I DID CHANGE THE AIR-FILTER A DAY EARLIER BUT COULD HAVE BEEN A COINCIDENCE.
