WHILE DRIVING AT LOWER SPEEDS AND CITY SPEEDS, ABS LIGHT COME ON WITH SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM MESSAGE APPEARS WHILE DRIVING AND TURNING. BRAKING IS TOUGH AND BARELY STOPS EVEN WITH HARD FOOT PRESSURE ON PEDAL. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM THAT INTERMITTENTLY HAPPENS. ONCE YOU LET THE CAR SIT FOR AWHILE (SINCE YOU ARE SCARED OF DRIVING IT), THE BRAKING SYSTEM RESETS AND PROBLEM IS NOT SEEN FOR MONTHS...UNTIL IT OCCURS AGAIN. INQUIRIES TO FORD ABOUT PROBLEM ESTIMATE THE COST OF REPLACING CYLINDER, HCU, AND BLEEDING BRAKES FAR EXCEEDS THE VALUE OF VEHICLE. ANNOYING AS THIS BRAKE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED AS A WEAKNESS OF THIS CAR'S BRAKING SYSTEM AS FAR BACK AS 2005! WHY DOES FORD NOT RECALL AND FIX A KNOWN PROBLEM IN A TIMELY MANNER? MAY HAVE TO SCRAP AN OTHERWISE EXCELLENT WORKING VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND UNSAFE TO FELLOW DRIVERS SINCE IT MAY NOT RELIABLY STOP.

BRACKET SEPARATED FROM UNDER-BODY OF VEHICLE RENDERING HAND BRAKE INOPERABLE. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY ON A SLOPE WITH REGULAR BRAKES APPLIED. PARKING BRAKE WAS BEING APPLIED TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OF VEHICLE ON AN INCLINE OFF OFF TRANSMISSION PARK LOCK.

THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO RON DUPRATT FORD LOCATED AT 1320 NORTH FIRST ST, DIXON, CA 95620, TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.

THIS SOMETIMES CAUSES THE "CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT TO APPEAR. THIS LIGHT MAY OR MAY NOT REMAIN ON AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF FOR A WHILE. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED BY MANY OTHERS, AND SHOULD BE HANDLED BY FORD AS A RECALL AS A PROPERLY WORKING BRAKING SYSTEM IS VITAL TO THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE ON THE ROAD. TODAY (NOV 2019) THE BRAKE SYSTEM DECIDED TO GO OUT (A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FEH) WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON A CURVY ROAD WHILE MY TWO KIDS WERE IN THE CAR. WE TRIED SLOWING DOWN BEFORE ENTERING THE CURVE AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK. LUCKILY WE ARE FINE BUT THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT. I'VE ONLY PUT 10K MILES ON THE CAR AND NOW FORD OF OCALA IS SAYING EVEN THOUGH IT'S A KNOW ISSUE THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE SPOKE WITH DONNA WHO WAS UNDERSTANDING BUT STILL GAVE US NO SOLUTION. SHE FORWARDED THE ISSUE TO THE SALES MANAGER AND WE ARE WAITING ON HIS CALL.THEY BASICALLY STOLE 7 GRAND FROM OUR FAMILY. WE'LL BE PURSUING THIS LEGALLY UNTIL THE ISSUE GETS RESOLVED.

WHAT IS A MASSIVE JOLT THAT SURE BOTH FRONT BRAKE LINES OFF HAS NO BRAKES TO STOP HOW DO YOU USE HANDBRAKE. GOT AHOLD OF CDOT AND WAS TOLD MARTIN MARIETTA WAS THE COMPANY IN CHARGE OF THE REPAVING PROJECT WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT AS THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS WARNING SIGNS POSTED.

THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE AND WAS LATER TAKEN TO HERTRICH FORD LINCOLN (1427 BAY RD, MILFORD, DE 19963, (302) 725-0031) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE REPAIR FEES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 107,405.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A FRIEND'S BUSINESS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE DEALER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000.

I WAS DRIVING AT A NORMAL SPEED, APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ON A CITY STREET. AS TRAFFIC SLOWED I BEGAN TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SUDDENLY I GOT SEVERAL ALERTS ON MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (BRAKE, ABS, AND REGEN DISCONNECT). AT THE SAME TIME I LOST ALL OR MOST OF MY BRAKING POWER. I WAS FORCED TO USE THE PARK BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, AND BARELY AVOIDED A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE.THIS WAS A VERY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. AFTER THE VEHICLE SAT FOR A SHORT TIME, WITH THE ENGINE OFF, THE SYSTEM APPARENTLY RESET ITSELF AND WHEN I RE-STARTED THE ENGINE ALL FUNCTIONS WERE OPERATIONAL ONCE AGAIN, AND ALL THE ALERTS WERE GONE. HOWEVER, THIS PERIOD WAS BRIEF. THINKING THIS MIGHT BE A SYSTEM GLITCH, I CAUTIOUSLY DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME. THE NEXT DAY THIS FAILURE RETURNED AFTER ABOUT 20 MILES OF DRIVING. AT THIS TIME I REALIZED THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS FLAW IN THE HYBRID BRAKING SYSTEM OF THIS MODEL YEAR FORD ESCAPE, AND POSSIBLY OTHER MODEL YEARS. I CONTACTED A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND I WAS SHOCKED WHEN THEY INFORMED ME THERE ARE NO RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR FAILURE. AS A MECHANIC I FIND THIS RIDICULOUS. AFTER A BRIEF SEARCH ONLINE I FOUND MANY HYBRID FORD ESCAPE OWNER'S THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS I DID. AT THIS POINT I DEEMED MY VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND DECIDED THE BEST THING TO DO WAS TO REPORT THIS FAILURE TO THE NHTSA WITH THE HOPES THAT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FAILURE BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. MY OPINION IS THE PROBLEM IS IN THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. (HCU). THIS IS A COMPLEX ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL UNIT THAT IS SPECIFIC TO THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. FOR THE RECORD MY VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 146,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

ONLY, THIS TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOD, WITH NO BRAKING EFFECT TO THE VEHICLE. THIS TIME, UNLIKE THE FIRST, 2 BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS (ABS & BRAKES!) ILLUMINATED ON THE DRIVER'S CONSOLE. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTED IT, AND THE INDICATORS HAD DISAPPEARED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD NORMAL RESISTANCE TO MY FOOT PRESSURE AND THE BRAKES WORKED NORMALLY. I CALLED A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS A 'GLITCH', AND SAID IT WAS MOST LIKELY A SENSOR OR SOME OTHER COMPUTER MALFUNCTION, BUT THAT NO WORK DONE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE COVERED SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. WANTING MORE INFORMATION, I LOCATED A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE.COM THAT SHOWS ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE VIDEO IS SEARCHABLE AND IS FOUND UNDER THE TITLE OF 'FORD ESCAPE HYBRID BRAKE PROBLEM'. I SEARCHED FOR ANY RECALLS FOR THIS SAME VEHICLE'S VIN, BUT FOUND NONE LISTED. WHAT CAN BE DONE ON BEHALF OF THE CONSUMER, ESPECIALLY IF THOSE VIDEO COST ESTIMATIONS ARE CORRECT?

I HAVE A 2006 FORD ESCAPE WITH A DEEP CONCERN AND ISSUES WITH THE ABS (BRAKING) SYSTEM. THE ABS INSTRUMENTATION LIGHT PERIODICALLY COMES ON INDICATING AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE PERFORMANCE WHILE BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE ABS LIGHT IS "ON". THE EXPERIENCE IS A SLIDING AND/OR JERKING WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. SEARCHING THE INTERNET THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS SURROUNDING THIS BRAKING ISSUE FOR THE FORD ESCAPE. THIS IS APPARENT IN SEVERAL MODEL YEARS FOR THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE CONCERNING BRAKE FAILURE. FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND MANY DEALERSHIPS ARE AWARE OF THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED.

I BOUGHT A 10 YEAR OLD 2006 ESCAPE HYBRID WITH 73,000 MILES. AFTER 4,000 MILE THE ABS LIGHT WOULD GO ON AND THE BRAKES WOULD GO INTO MANUAL MODE AND THE WARNING LIGHTS READ CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM AND REGEN DISENAGED. AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR THE PROBLEM WOULD GO AWAY. THIS WOULD HAPPEN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE CAR STILL DID STOP WITH MORE BRAKE PRESSURE. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY RESET THE ERROR CODES AND GAVE US BACK THE CAR. THEY STATED THIS WAS PER THE FORD CORPORATE STANDARDS AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES DESPITE THE ERROR CODES. ABOUT 6 WEEKS LATER THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN AND KEPT HAPPENING. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL IS SOFT AND WE ARE NOT CONFIDENT IT WILL STOP EVERY TIME AS IT DID BEFORE. WE BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER. NOW FORD HAS DIAGNOSED AN ISSUE WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER, HCU AND ABS COMPUTER ALL NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR $8100 (I ONLY PAID $7500 FOR THE CAR). SINCE FORD ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN CALIBRATE THE ABS COMPUTER WE CANNOT GET THE REPAIR CHEAPER ELSEWHERE. FORD WILL DO NOTHING BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD.

THE PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL MORE TIMES ON BOTH HIGHWAYS AND RURAL ROADS AND ALWAYS FIXED BY TURNING THE CAR OFF AND LETTING IT SIT FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES. THE PROBLEMS DON'T INITIATE WHEN WE ARE ACTUALLY BRAKING. TOOK THE CAR TO OUR FORD DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTICS TEST. THE REPORT THEY GAVE US SAID " VERIFIED CUSTOMERS CONCERN. RETRIEVE CODA 1524, 1526. BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL SENSOR RELATED. ALSO RETRIEVE CODES FOR TRACTION BATTERY COOLING FANS." WHEN THIS HAPPENS I AM FORCED TO RAPIDLY RELEASE THE BRAKE PEDAL AND BRAKE AGAIN (PUMPING) THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THIS PUMPING OF THE BRAKES HAS CAUSE THE BREAK PEDAL TO GO FROM HARD/IMPOSSIBLE TO PUSH TO COMPLETELY SOFT HITTING THE FLOOR WITH NO BRAKING CAPABILITIES. ON THESE OCCASIONS I AM FORCED TO PULL OF THE ROAD QUICKLY, DOWNSHIFT TO LOW GEAR AND EVEN USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO AVOID CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. ONLY ABOUT 60% OF THE TIME WHEN THIS EVENT OCCURRED DOES THE ABS LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT AND SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATE OR DISPLAY. WHEN THIS OCCURRES I AM USUALLY FORCED TO TURN THE ENGIN OFF, REMOVE THE KEY, LET THE SYSTEM PURGE (MAKES NOISE) AFTER THE VEHICLE SITS FOR A COUPLE MINUTES AND THEN RESTART THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO KEEP DRIVING AND FIX THE ISSUE. SOMETIMES IT FIXES TO ISSUE FOR THE REST OF THE DRIVING TIME WHILE OTHERS ONLY WORK TEMPORARILY AND THE ISSUE RETURNS ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. I FEEL THAT THIS BRAKING ISSUE IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR MY FAMILY AND I AND OUR PIECE OF MIND IN THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE IS NOT GOOD. WITH A CONCERTED EFFORT I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND MAKE THE TURN WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE ABS LIGHT AND SERVICE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS WERE LIT. CONDITION PERSISTED AS WE CONTINUED A FEW MILES TO THE SHOPPING PLAZA. AFTER SHOPPING WE DECIDED TO RETURN DIRECTLY HOME, BUT WHEN CAR WAS STARTED THE FAULT HAD CLEARED AND THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. WE HAVE JUST SPENT THE MORNING SEARCHING INTERNET AND FIND THIS IS AN ISSUE FORD KNOWS ABOUT AND IS DENYING TO ACKNOWLEDGE. AND APPARENTLY IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO RESOLVE WITH THE NEED TO REPLACE THE HCU. WE NOW UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS BUT ARE AMONG THE MANY WHO FEEL THIS IS CERTAINLY A SERIOUS ENOUGH SAFETY ISSUE FORD SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN ITS RESOLVE FOR OWNERS WITH DEFECTIVE BRAKE SYSTEMS. HAD THIS HAPPENED WHEN WE NEEDED TO STOP, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT, WITHOUT A DOUBT. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO AND MY MECHANIC RESET THE COMPUTER AND ALL WAS GOOD FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS. THEN THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. MY MECHANIC, WHO I TRUST IMPECCABLY WAS BAFFLED BY THE WHOLE THING AND ASKED THAT WE SEND THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP. I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE. THE DEALER (FIRST DEALER) IS TELLING US WE NEED TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER, THEN MAYBE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT, WHICH THANKFULLY, IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY IN CA BECAUSE IT'S A HYBRID PART. HOWEVER, IF IT IS THE HCU, WE STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MASTER CYLINDER, EVEN THOUGH I SUSPECT IT'S THE HCU FROM WHAT I'VE READ ONLINE. I THEN CALLED THE DEALER WHO INSPECTED THE CAR WHEN WE INITIALLY BOUGHT IT (SECOND DEALER FROM HERE ON OUT). THE FIRST DEALER IS QUOTING US $2800 TO FIX THE MASTER, WHILE THE OTHER IS QUOTING AROUND $2000. THE SECOND ONE IS ALSO SAYING HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE HCU AND JUST CHANGE IT OUT WHERE DEALER 1 IS SAYING FORD SAYS IN ORDER TO CHANGE OUT THE HCU, THE MASTER HAS TO BE CHANGED FIRST. THE SECOND DEALER IS SAYING THIS SIMPLY ISN'T TRUE. WE JUST BOUGHT THE CAR FROM A PRIVATE SELLER AND FRANKLY, I'M SCARED TO DRIVE IT. IT IS NOW A WEEK LATER AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE ABS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $4800.00. I THEN REPLIED TO NOT REPLACE THE ABS AS I HAVE BEEN A CAUTIOUS DRIVER FOR OVER 45 YEARS AND DRIVE DEFENSIVELY. THE SHOP TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO BLEED ALL THE TIRE'S BRAKES AS I REQUESTED THAT I "AT LEAST" HAVE HYDRAULIC BRAKES AND IT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THE FLUID LEVEL. ALL WORKED PROPERLY EXCEPTING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. THIS EVENING I WENT AND RETRIEVED THE VEHICLE FROM THE SHOP AFTER THEY HAD REPLACED THE LEAKING HOSE ON THE LEFT FRONT TIRE (ALSO HAD THEM REPLACE THE HOSE ON THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE). ACCORDING TO THE CONVERSATION WITH THE LEAD TECHNICIAN MY FRONT BRAKES WERE HARDLY USED (OVER 60% OF THE CARS BRAKING) AND LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE RUSTING OR CORRODED OVER WHILE THE ROTORS AND ALL THE PARTS REPLACED EXACTLY ONE YEAR PRIOR STILL LOOKED NEW. FAST FORWARD TO APPROX. 8/17/14, I PULLED INTO MY GARAGE AND BEFORE I TURNED MY CAR OFF BOTH THE LED MESSAGE BOARD INDICATED AN ISSUE NEEDED ATTENTION (CAN'T RECALL EXACT WORDING) AND THE RED BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH LIT UP INDICATING THE BRAKE UNIT NEEDED SERVICE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SAME MECHANIC AND HE PERFORMED A COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC TEST. HE GOT BACK TO FOLLOWING: "BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS CODE: C1471 HIGH PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR VOLUME CONSUMPTION PLAUSIBILITY FAILURE. RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT OF THE MASTER CYLINDER FIRST AND RECHECK SYSTEM. IF CODE RETURNS THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED." THE COST TO PERFORM THIS WORK IS NEARLY $8,900.00 AND ALMOST ALL OF THAT CHARGE IS FOR REPLACING THESE TWO DEFECTIVE PARTS, NOT LABOR. THE COST TO REPLACE THE FAILING HYDRAULICS EXCEEDS THE BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE ALSO. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY 91,589 MILES ON IT AND THE WHOLE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IS FAILING. THE BRAKES WORKED AND THE CAR STOPPED/. THE NEXT DAY I NOTICED THAT AS SOON AS I STARTED THE CAR THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT WERE ON. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN, WHICH RETURNED CODE C1475. THANKFULLY, BESIDES BEING SCARED TO DEATH, I WAS OK. THE DEALERSHIP TOWED MY VEHICLE AND STATED THEY "MIRACULOUSLY" (MY SARCASM) HAD BRAKES WHEN DRIVING IT FROM THE TOW TRUCK INTO THE SHOP. THEY HAD GREAT DIFFICULTIES FIGURING OUT WHAT WAS WRONG AND HAD EVEN TALKED WITH THE FORD COMPANY AND CAME UP WITH THE HYDRAULICS SYSTEM BEING THE ISSUE WHICH WAS THEN REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP. AT A LATER TIME WITH FURTHER OCCURRENCE, I WAS INFORMED THE MODULAR HAD ALSO AT THE FIRST BRAKE FAILURE BEEN REPLACED, ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO PROOF OF THAT ON MY SERVICE RECORD (ANOTHER ISSUE). AFTER REPLACING THESE ITEMS, THE DEALERSHIP CONTINUED TO HAVE DIFFICULTIES TRYING TO GET THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS FROM ILLUMINATING ON THE DASH AND APPARENTLY HAD TO UNHOOK SOME VACUUM PUMP TO CORRECT ISSUE. AS NOTHING HAPPENED WHEN I TOUCHED THE BRAKES, I HAMMERED THEM AND CAME TO A SHARP JERKING HALT. IT WAS A LITTLE FRIGHTENING AS ONCOMING TRAFFIC WAS GOING 45-50 MPH. THEN THE ABS AND BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHTING CAME ON. IF I HAD NOT KNOWN HOW NON-POWER BRAKES FELT, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE SLID INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. I SEE ONLINE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF THE ESCAPE HYBRIDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF NOW FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS. I HAD A BRAKE JOB DONE ON THE REAR BRAKES 2 MONTHS AGO, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE FRONT BRAKES ARE FINE. THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR 1300 DOLLARS, AND THEN STATE THAT IT MIGHT NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND THEY WOULD THEN HAVE TO REPLACE A CONTROL MODULE FOR ABOUT 4500 TO 5000 DOLLARS. I NOTICED ONLINE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SEEM TO BE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID FROM 2005 TO 2006, AND THEY ARE INCURRING THE SAME COSTLY REPAIR. THE BRAKES FAIL ON A REGULAR BASIS WHILE SLOWING DOWN FROM SPEEDS BETWEEN 10 AND 35 MPH. IT OCCURS AS A SUDDEN RELEASE OF BRAKING PRESSURE WHILE STEPPING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN. AT THAT TIME A MOMENTARY WARNING LIGHT COMES ON FOR SEVERAL SECONDS AND THE SYSTEM APPEARS TO GO INTO A FAIL-SAFE MODE THAT ALLOWS MANUAL OPERATION OF THE BRAKES. THIS CAUSES A LARGE INCREASE IN BRAKING DISTANCE AND I CONSIDER IT VERY DANGEROUS. THIS FAILURE SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO THE HYBRID BRAKING SYSTEM AND MAY BE COMMON TO OTHER HYBRID VEHICLES. AFTER STOPPING THE WARNING LIGHT GOES AWAY AND THE BRAKES WILL AGAIN FUNCTION NORMALLY. THE FAILURE DOES NOT OCCUR CONTINUOUSLY BUT IT DOES OCCUR ALMOST EVERY DAY THAT IT IS DRIVEN. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN A REPAIR SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES WITH MANY PART REPLACED BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO EVADE OUR FLEET MECHANICS. THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND COMMONLY KNOWN WHERE THERE ARE LARGE FLEETS OF HYBRID VEHICLES. MY CO-WORKER DRIVES THE SAME TYPE OF ESCAPE HYBRID AND HE HAS THE SAME FAILURE. WHILE TRAVELING HOME ON AN INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH THE RED BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER A LIGHT BREAKING SITUATION. I DID THE SYSTEM CHECK AVAILABLE ON THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKE FLUID WAS SHOWN AS OK. THE BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED NOT LONG AGO SO I WAS CONFUSED. A SHORT TIME LATER THE YELLOW ABS LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I WENT TO BRAKE MY FOOT WENT TO THE FLOORBOARD AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT STOPPING. I SWERVED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. IT TOOK A GREAT DISTANCE ( I WOULD SAY MORE THAN 100 YARDS ) FOR THE VEHICLE TO STOP. I WAS NEVER SO SCARED IN MY LIFE. I DROVE HOME ON SIDE STREETS AT 25 MPH WITH MY WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING AND VIRTUALLY NO BRAKES. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP I RESEARCHED THE BREAK FAILURE ISSUE AND TO MY AMAZEMENT FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER SUCH INCIDENTS. AFTER FIVE DAYS IN THE REPAIR SHOP AND THREE FAILED ATTEMPTS BY THE TECHNICIAN TO BLEED THE BREAK LINES I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A $4200 COMPUTER CONTROL UNIT. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN THE ELECTRICALLY CONTROLLED BREAK SYSTEM OF THE HYBRID VEHICLE AND NO PERSON SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE TERROR OF ATTEMPTING TO STOP FROM 70 MPH WITH THE BREAKING SYSTEM SHUT DOWN. I HAD TO EXIT THE ROADWAY ONTO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID OTHER VEHICLES. I PUT MY VEHICLE IN LOW GEAR FROM DRIVE AND APPLIED MY EMERENGY BRAKE TO STOP MY CAR. THIS IS THE "SECOND" TIME I HAVE HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH THIS BAKE PROBLEM. THEY ADVISED THAT SINCE THE "CODE LIGHTS" WERE NOT ON AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSIS THE PROBLEM. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO DRIVE THE ESCAPE UNTIL THE "CODE LIGHTS" CAME BACK ON AND THEN BRING IT BACK FOR SERVICE!!! I COMPLIED TO THIS REQUEST AND BOUGHT THE TRUCK BACK IN WITH THE "CODE LIGHTS" ON AND THE MESSAGE READING. DEALERSHIP WORKED ON THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND THE ASSIST SERVICE MANAGER DROVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS TO CHECK IT OUT. THIS STARTED ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. I REPORTED IT TO FORD WHO SAID THEY DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT AT THE DEALER AND NATIONAL LEVEL. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT THE DEALERSHIP AND MENTIONED THE INTERMITTENT BRAKE FAILURE. AFTER THE OIL SERVICE, THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR A YEAR. I THOUGHT FORD HAD SECRETLY FIXED IT WHILE THEY WERE CHANGING THE OIL. THEN ABOUT A WEEK AGO THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED AND HAS HAPPENED 10 TIMES. I THINK IT IS RELATED TO THE CAR NOT HAVING ENOUGH POWER BECAUSE THIS HAPPENS WHILE THE ICE (INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE) IS OFF. THIS EXTENDED THE BRAKING DISTANCE TO AN UNSAFE AND UNPREDICTABLE LENGTH ON DRY PAVEMENT. TWO MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT AND REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT RIGHT RING THE FRONT LEFT RING BROKE AGAIN SETTING OFF THE ABS AT AN UNPREDICTABLE TIME.

I JUST BOUGHT A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE SERVICE BREAK SYSTEM LIGHT AND MESSAGE CAME ON MONDAY, THE 2ND TIME I DROVE IT, ON THE WAY TO WORK. I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION BUT IT TURNED OFF. NEXT MORNING, SAME THING SO I CHECKED FLUIDS. IT WAS OFF AGAIN THE REST OF THAT DAY. LIT UP AGAIN WEDNESDAY. I MADE IT THAT EVENING TO A SERVICE STATION BEFORE THEY CLOSED (VERY RURAL AREA). THE WARNINGS WERE NOT ON AND HE COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING OBVIOUS ON PRELIMINARY INSPECTION BUT SAID TO BRING IN IN THE MORNING IF THE WARNING WAS BACK. THURSDAY IT ACTED FUNNY ON MY DRIVEWAY. THE NEXT CURVE I FOUND OUT WHY, NO BREAKING POWER EVEN WITH THE EXTREMELY STIFF AND DIFFICULT PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. I FINALLY GOT IT TO A STOP WAY PAST THE CRAZY RIDE AROUND THE CURVE. I STOPPED TO CALM MYSELF AND DECIDE IF IT WAS POSSIBLE TO GET TO TOWN. I DECIDED THE E-BRAKE SEEMED TO STOP IT IF I KEPT IT VERY SLOW. SO I PROCEEDED TO TOWN-NOT TO A FORD DEALER BECAUSE OF SOME VERY SCARY BIG HILLS, BUT INSTEAD TO THE SERVICE STATION WHO I TRUST. HE WAS BOOKED A WEEK AND A HALF AND HE DIDN'T KNOW IF HIS COMPUTER HAD THE HYBRID PROGRAMMING TO CHECK IT. SO I HAD TO TOW IT 63M TO THE DEALER I GOT IT FROM, THINKING THEY WOULD STAND BY IT OR IT WOULD BE COVERED BY THE "DRIVETRAIN PLUS" SERVICE AGREEMENT I PURCHASED TO COVER ANY SCARY PRICED REPAIRS THAT CROP UP ON OLDER CARS. IT WAS SOLD AS-IS, AND IOWA HAS NO LEMON LAW APPARENTLY, THE PLAN I PURCHASED SOUNDS LIKE IT WON'T COVER IT, AND THEY OFFERED ME A MEASLY 10% OFF THE BILL THAT IS ABOUT HALF AGAIN WHAT I PAID FOR THE CAR. I GOT TO DRIVE MY NEW USED CAR 4 1/2 TIMES. ALL I CAN DO IS THANK MY LUCKY STARS MY KIDS WEREN'T IN THE CAR, THERE WASN'T A CAR NEAR ME, I WASN'T COMING DOWN ONE OF THE STEEP AND CURVY RIVER BLUFFS ON MY WAY TO OR FROM WORK, OR ANY NUMBER OF OTHER SCARY SCENARIOS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN. FALIURE OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM'S HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT HCU AND MASTER CYLINDER IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND A DESIGN FLAW MANY HAVE EXPERIENCED.

IN 12/2006, MY FORD ESCAPE HYBRID BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING. I WOULD GET A "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" MESSAGE AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT WOULD APPEAR. I BROUGHT IT IN TO CHAMPION FORD IN BOULDER, CO 3 TIMES. THE FIRST 2 TIMES THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. THE 3RD TIME THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AFTER I GAVE THEM INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET AND THE TSB. WITH COOPERATION FROM FORD SERVICE THEY PERFORMED A GROUND/HARNESS REPLACEMENT. CHAMPION FORD THEN WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. OVER THE NEXT 4 YEARS, I BROUGHT MY CAR TO SILL-TERHAR FORD IN BROOMFIELD, CO FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND ADDITIONAL 6 TIMES, WHERE THEY PERFORMED THE SAME SERVICE (REPLACE GROUND/HARNESS). NOW, THEY ARE SAYING THE FIX REQUIRES A NEW ABS MODULE ($4,000). THROUGH MY OWN RESEARCH, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS RAMPANT WITH OTHER OWNERS LOSING THEIR BRAKES. I NEVER LOST MY BRAKES, BUT AFTER DISCUSSING THIS WITH MY CURRENT FORD SERVICE REP, HE SUGGESTS THAT MY PROBLEM COULD RESULT IN "IMPROPER" BRAKING BEHAVIOR, WHICH MEANS I'VE BEEN DRIVING AN UNSAFE VEHICLE FOR 4 YEARS BASED ON FORD'S SERVICE RECOMMENDATION FOR MY PROBLEM. BRAKING WAS GREATLY REDUCED AS IF THE CAR THOUGHT I WAS SLIDING ON ICE OR SNOW. AFTER THE SYSTEM DETECTED FAILURE ( 3-5 SECONDS) THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON IN MY DASHBOARD AND THE ABS SYSTEM SEEMED TO BE DEACTIVATED BY THE CAR. WHEN I GOT HOME AND TOOK THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL OFF AND INSPECTED MY BRAKES AND ABS SENSOR, I NOTICED THE LEFT FRONT ABS TONE RING WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED, FREE SPINNING LOOSELY AROUND THE AXLE AND WAS BROKEN COMPLETELY ON ONE END. I WENT ONTO GOOGLE AND RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEMS ON THEIR FORD ESCAPES. I WOULD LIKE THIS TO BE INVESTIGATED AS I THINK THAT PERHAPS THE ABS TONE RINGS FORD USED ARE FAULTY AND COULD POSE A DANGER TO MOTORIST BY CAUSING SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY OVER A FEW SECONDS AS DIRECT RESULT OF THE ABS TONE RING FAILURE. THE ABS TONE RING IS REPLACEABLE BY FORD OR YOU CAN BUY THE PART AT A PARTS STORE. REPAIR DOES INVOLVE REMOVING PART OF THE AXLE, SO IT IS BEST DONE BY A MECHANIC OR TRAINED PROFESSIONAL. *TR

I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, GOING ABOUT 35 MPH WHEN I FELT MY CAR START TO SLID LIKE IT WAS ON ICE EVEN THOUGH THE PAVEMENT WAS DRY. MY ABS LIGHT AND MY SERVICE 4WD LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD A VERY HARD TIME GETTING HOME BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE FAILING. I CAME HOME GOOGLED IT AND REALIZED THAT IT WAS MY TONE RING AND THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. SURE ENOUGH NEXT DAY TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND THAT'S WHAT IT WAS. THE PROBLEM DATES BACK TO 2000 FORD ESCAPES AND AS RECENT AS 2010 FORD ESCAPES. THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED ME THAT THE RING COULD SNAP JUST FROM TURNING A CORNER. I DON'T KNOW WHY FORD ISN'T BEING REQUIRED TO FIX THIS ISSUE. WHY ARE THE BEING ALLOWED TO PUT THIS SAME PRODUCT IN THE VEHICLE YEAR AFTER YEAR KNOWING ITS INFERIOR. WHEN THE RING BREAKS IT MAKES IT VERY HARD TO STOP THE CAR WHICH IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD.

I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES PER HOUR, APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AND BUSY INTERSECTION. I APPLIED BRAKES (VIA PEDAL) AS USUAL, BUT HAD NO BRAKING POWER / CORRESPONDING SLOWDOWN. I HAD TO JAM MY FOOT TO THE FLOOR AND COVER THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN CASE I NEEDED IT, AND THANKFULLY I WAS THE FIRST CAR AT THE LIGHT SO THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. THE REST OF THE DRIVE, IT TOOK AT LEAST 5 TIMES LONGER/MORE DISTANCE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE TO A STOP THAN NORMAL AND AT THE SAME MOMENT I LOST BRAKING POWER, A CHIME SOUNDED & BOTH THE ABS AND BRAKE(S) LIGHT ON THE DASH LIT UP; MESSAGE CENTER READ "SERVICE BRAKES SOON". I JUST HAD THE VEH IN FOR ITS 40K MILE SERVICE 2 DAYS AGO & IT HAD NOTHING WRONG WITH IT--BRAKES WERE ALL LISTED AS TOP CONDITION. NOW I'M ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, UNSURE WHEN THIS CONDITION WILL RECUR (THE LIGHTS RESET & AND I CHECKED TODAY--THE BRAKES ARE WORKING AGAIN, FOR NOW.) WHEN THE CONDITION OCCURS, BRAKING IS AN ODD SLOW PULSING, LIKE A SLOWED DOWN VERSION OF AN EMERGENCY ABS STOP ("PUMPING THE BRAKES" FEELING.) I'VE NEVER HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS UNTIL THIS INCIDENT. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID AND HAVE HAD AT LEAST FOUR EXPERIENCES OF MALFUNCTIONING SPEED SENSORS. THEY HAVE GIVEN ME CONCERN ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE AND CAUSED ME INCONVENIENCE AND EXPENSES FOR REPAIR. THE TYPICAL INCIDENT INVOLVES A MALFUNCTIONING OF THE ABS AND 4X4 SYSTEMS, WITH WARNING LAMPS LIGHTING UP INDICATING THAT THERE IS A DANGER OF SKIDDING AND LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. IN THREE INSTANCES I HAD THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED BY FORD DEALERS, WHO REPORTED: "FOUND REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TO BE FAULTY" (JAN. 08); "REPLACED THE FAILED RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR" (SEPT. 08); "INSPECTED THE SENSOR AT THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND FOUND THE TONE RING ON THE AXLE CRACKED. NEEDS NEW AXLE" (AUG. 09). TWO OF THESE WERE DONE ON WARRANTY; THE THIRD COST $344.95. ALL DEALERS HAVE GIVEN ASSURANCES THAT EVEN WITH WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING PROBLEMS AS DESCRIBED IT WAS "SAFE" TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL REPAIRS CAN BE MADE. ON MARCH 7 AND 8, 2010, WHILE ON A TRIP AWAY FROM HOME, THE SAME SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN. GIVEN EARLIER ASSURANCES BY DEALERS, I CONTINUED ON MY TRIP IGNORING AS BEST AS POSSIBLE THE WARNING LIGHTS, POPPING SOUNDS OF THE 4X4, AND OCCASIONAL SHUDDERING OF THE ABS SYSTEM. SURPRISINGLY, AFTER SOME HIGHWAY DRIVING (PERHAPS 50 MILES) THE WARNING SIGNALS STOPPED LIGHTING UP AND THE CAR SEEMED TO HANDLE FAIRLY NORMALLY. NOW, A FEW DAYS LATER, THE CAR CONTINUES TO OPERATE WITHOUT SIGNS OF MALFUNCTION, BUT IT REMAINS UNCLEAR WHETHER THE PROBLEM "FIXED ITSELF" OR THE COMPUTER-CONTROLLED READ-OUTS HAVE CEASED FUNCTIONING, THEREBY DISGUISING THE POSSIBLE PERSISTENCE OF THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM. WE CONTACTED FORD WHOSE RESPONSE WAS THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE DEALER THEN CONTACTED FORD DIRECTLY AND FORD AGREED TO TAKE $1000 OFF THE PART COST WHICH BROUGHT OUR REPAIR DOWN TO $5000. OUR NON-FORD MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE A USED PART FOR $350, INSTALL IT THEN TAKE IT TO FORD TO REFLASH THE COMPUTER COMPONENTS. FORD CAME BACK TO US AFTER ABOUT A WEEK AND SAID THEY COULD NOT REFLASH THE SYSTEM BECAUSE THOSE COMPONENTS COULD ONLY BE PROGRAMMED ONCE ON THE INITIAL BUILD. WE WOULD BE FORCED TO PURCHASE A NEW PART FROM FORD WHO THEN ARE ALSO THE ONLY ONES WHO POSSESS THE SOFTWARE TO GET THE VEHICLES WORKING AGAIN. I LOOKED ONLINE AND WOULD BE ABLE TO PURCHASE THE PART FOR $2300 BUT COULD ONLY HAVE A FORD DEALER DO THE REMAINDER OF THE WORK TO GET THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TO WORK. NOT SURE IF ANY FORD DEALERSHIP WOULD ALLOW US TO BRING IN OUR OWN PART WE PURCHASED OFF THE INTERNET IF WE WERE TO PURCHASE THE CHEAPER PART. IN ADDITION, IT TURNS OUT FORD IS REQUIRING PARTS DEALERS TO RETURN THE USED PART TO FORD AFTER PURCHASING THE NEW PART. FORD THEN REMANUFACTURES THE PART (WHICH THEY GOT FOR FREE FROM THE CONSUMER) AND RESELLS IT AS A NEW PART FOR $4300 TO SOME OTHER UNSUSPECTING HYBRID OWNER. THE 05-06 FORD ESCAPES HAVE A MAJOR FAILURE IN THEIR BRAKING AND AXLE SYSTEM. I BOUGHT A NEW ESCAPE IN 2006 IN LESS THEN TWO YEARS THE ABS LIGHT CAME AFTER REPLACING THE FRONT BRAKE PADS. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT THE FRONT AXLE HAS "TEETH" ON IT THAT EASILY BREAK OFF AND THEREFORE DISENGAGING THE ABS SYSTEM. UPON PURCHASE RUMBLING WAS FELT WHILE BRAKING. THE FUCCILLO CAR DEALER MECHANIC SAID THAT IT WAS THE 4WD KICKING IN. THIS PROBLEM CONTINUED AND ONCE THE 90 DAY WARRANTY WAS UP THEIR STORY CHANGED. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE TONE RING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE SAID THEY HAVE HAD MANY OF THESE AND BE LOOKING FOR A RECALL. THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE SENSOR, BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT DIDN'T RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY IN SOUTH FLORIDA, WHERE THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY BRAKE IS HIGHLY ESSENTIAL. *NM
