ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall began August 3, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

While driving at 60 mph, your Escape suddenly lost all engine power with no warning lights showing, and it wouldn't restart. The dealer replaced the catalytic converter, but the problem happened again. You suspect the alternator may be the cause, though it wasn't repaired. The fix will likely involve diagnosing whether the alternator or another electrical component is failing to keep the engine running.

Your Escape has trouble shifting into 1st and 2nd gear—the engine runs hard and makes a ticking noise until you get past 3rd gear, when it runs normally. The transmission also shifts harshly with clunking sounds. More seriously, your car won't stay in Park and rolls even when parked, forcing you to use a brick to keep it stationary. You received a recall letter about this issue but lost it, and the transmission and parking brake system need professional inspection and repair.

While driving at 60 mph on the highway, your car began shaking severely and making loud noise. You discovered the ignition coil had come loose and a spark plug was missing from the engine. After a mechanic installed a new spark plug, the car ran fine for 5 weeks, then the same problem occurred again — the spark plug blew out of the engine a second time. Now the spark plug won't reinstall properly, and the engine smells like gasoline and makes noise like the muffler is loose. The repair will likely require replacing the spark plug and investigating why it keeps ejecting from the cylinder head, possibly involving cylinder head thread repair or replacement.

AFTER STOPPING TO POSSIBLY TAKE A LEFT TURN, I REALIZED I NEEDED TO GO ONE MORE BLOCK SO I PRESSED THE GAS TO CONTINUE FORWARD. HOWEVER RIGHT AS I DID THAT THE LIGHT TURNED YELLOW SO I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKE INSTEAD. THE CAR SHOT FORWARD AT FULL THROTTLE AND THE CAR WENT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND THE RED LIGHT. THE STREET WAS CLEAR IN FRONT OF US AND I HAD A FULL LONG BLOCK TO TRY TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE'S ACCELERATION. I CALMLY SHIFTED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS VERY SURPRISED THAT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I STARTED WORRYING AS THE CAR CONTINUED TO SPEED UP. I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND PARK (WHICH NORMALLY ISN'T POSSIBLE). ALL THE WHILE THE VEHICLE SPED UP. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE FOR ALMOST THE WHOLE BLOCK AND WASN'T SLOWING THE VEHICLE AT ALL. I DECIDED THAT SINCE THE TRANSMISSION AND BRAKES WERE NOT RESPONDING, THAT I MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE MY FOOT TO GET UNDER THE GAS PEDAL AND LIFT IT UP (BECAUSE IT FELT FROM THE FULL ACCELERATION LIKE IT WAS STUCK ON THE FLOOR). HOWEVER, THE PEDAL EASILY CAME OFF THE FLOOR BUT WOULD FLOP BACK DOWN AS SOON AS I MOVED MY FOOT OUT FROM UNDER IT. IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT STUCK BY A FOREIGN OBJECT OR FLOOR MAT THOUGH. HAD TO AVOID A PEDESTRIAN THAT WAS CROSSING THE STREET AND THE ROAD AHEAD WAS OBSCURED BECAUSE IT WENT DOWN A STEEP HILL SO I CHOSE TO TURN RIGHT. THE CAR ENDED UP HITTING THE CURB, HITTING 2 SMALL TREES. AND FLIPPING UPSIDE DOWN BEFORE ALSO HITTING A PARKED CAR. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO "REV" AT HIGH SPEEDS, EVEN UPSIDE DOWN, FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE IT FINALLY CUT OFF. MY HAIR FELL OUT, AND NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE. I CONTACTED A FORD DEALERSHIP, BECAUSE I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT UNDER THE STATE AND FEDERAL EMISSIONS WARRANTY, SOME COMPONENTS NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. I HAVE A 2001 FOCUS ZX3 - 5SP THAT TENDS TO STALL WHEN THE AC IS ON. BUT IT MAY NOT STALL DURING THE "INITIAL" USE PERIOD. WITHOUT WARNING, IT WILL STALL AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND THEN RESTARTED. MY SERVICE SHOP CHECKED THE COMPUTER CODES FOR A PROBLEM AND NOTHING CAME UP. YESTERDAY, IT WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 30MINS WITH THE AC ON (OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AROUND 80+ DEGREES). THE VEHICLE RAN FINE WITH THE RPMS NORMAL WHEN STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 90 MINS. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART IT WOULD STALL. TO GET STARTED I NEEDED TO KEEP FOOT ON GAS PEDAL (TO MAINTAIN A HIGH ENOUGH RPM TO PREVENT THE STALL). IF I DID NOT KEEP THE RPMS UP, VEHICLE WOULD STALL. WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPING, I NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL TO MAINTAIN THE RPMS. (THIS CAN BE CHALLENGING WITH A 5-SPD.) THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED FOR OVER FOUR HOURS. IT THEN STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM AND RAN NORMALLY. DURING THIS PERIOD I DID NOT HAVE THE AC ON. I SEE THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS. HOWEVER, NEITHER FORD MOTOR'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE NOR THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP (ECHELON FORD) ON 6/8/10 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE IT. I WAS CHARGED $108 FOR THE SHOP TIME AND STILL HAVE NO TECHNICAL ANSWER TO THIS CRITICAL AND POTENTIALLY FATAL PROBLEM... *TR

WHILE TRAVELING UPHILL GOING APPROX 45 MPH THE ENGINE ON MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE SHUT DOWN. COMPLETE POWER TO MY CAR WAS LOST. THE ODOMETER EVEN LOST THE MILES DRIVEN AND WAS REPLACED BY DASHES MOMENTARILY. WHEN THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN I STEERED THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO CAME ON WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS INDICATION THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. AFTER I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I PUT CAR IN PARK AND TURNED KEY OFF. I WAITED APPROX 5 MINUTES AND RESTARTED THE CAR WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF AND CAR STARTED SMOOTHLY AS USUAL. MAR 27 HAD 2001 FORD ESCAPE IN DEALERSHIP FOR OIL LEAK AND ENGINE HESITATION. LEAK NOT FIXED ON 1ST TIME TAKEN TO DEALER. #3 COIL, INTAKE GASKETS REPLACED & TUNEUP DONE FOR HESITATION. MAR 31 VEHICLE TAKEN BACK FOR SAME PROBLEMS, #4 COIL WAS REPLACED AND WAS TOLD NO OIL LEAK, ALSO TOLD ENGINE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE WASHED AND WATER BLEW OUT #4 COIL. ON THE WAY HOME, STILL SMELLED BURNING OIL & ENGINE HESITATION STILL FELT. CALLED DEALERSHIP, WAS TOLD TO LET THE CAR SIT FOR A DAY. CAR SAT FOR 2 DAYS. CAR STILL DROVE THE SAME, OIL LEAK & HESITATION STILL THERE. TOOK VEHICLE STRAIGHT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, ON THE WAY THERE VEHICLE HAD NO POWER AND WOULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 15MPH. THEN THE EGR VALVE BLEW. AND I LIVE 2 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP HAD THE VEHICLE FROM APR 1 TO APR 15. NOW I WAS TOLD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ON THE MANIFOLDS ARE PLUGGED UP AND THIS IS CAUSING THE HESITATION AND THE OIL LEAK WAS FROM THE TIMING CHAIN COVER. DEALERSHIP HAD TO REMOVE THE ENGINE TO REPLACE THE GASKET. WAS TOLD THEY DON'T KNOW HOW THEY MISSED THIS LEAK THE OTHER 2 TIMES I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR THIS LEAK. ONLY THING THE WARRANTY COVERED IS THE OIL LEAK. FEDERAL MANDATED EMISSION LAW IS 8YRS OR 80,000 MILES. VEHICLE IS IN THE 8 YEARS AND @ 75,500 MILES. FORD REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE CONVERTERS. TOOK ESCAPE TO LOCAL MECHANIC APR 17. EXHAUST INSPECTION SHOWED ONLY THE REAR CATALYTIC CONVERTER PLUGGED (REPLACED NOW). #4 & #6 COILS NOT FIRING. COILS WORK CONNECTED IN OTHER SPARKPLUG LOCATIONS. WIRING FOR COILS NOT WORKING. THESE COIL LOCATIONS WORKED PRIOR TO GOING BACK TO DEALERSHIP. MECHANIC SAID I SHOULD SUE THE DEALERSHIP FOR MISDIAGNOSIS AND BREAKING ADDITIONAL ITEMS WHEN ENGINE WAS REMOVED. WE CALLED THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN APRIL OF 2004 AND HE SAID THAT HE WAS WILLING TO HELP US, BUT DECIDED NOT TO STATING IT WOULD BE "BAD BUSINESS" TO REPLACE TO CAR EVEN THOUGH WE HAD PURCHASED IT 8 MONTHS PREVIOUS TO THE INCIDENT. WE THEN HAD IT TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE A NEW ENGINE WAS PLACED IN THE 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE SPEAKING TO A FORD MECHANIC HE STATED THAT HE HAS SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE TO THE ESCAPE. THE DEALER THAT FINALLY ENDED UP WORKING ON THE ESCAPE CALLED FORD AND TOLD THEM THE PROBLEM BUT FORD STATED THAT THEY HAD HEARD ABOUT THIS BUT THERE WASN'T ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO WARRANT A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE DEFECT. THE DEALER SAYS YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE BOTTLE AND IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE ESCAPES. HE SUGGESTED I BUY A REPLACEMENT BOTTLE AT A COST OF ABOUT $62.00. THIS UNIT SHOULD NOT GO OUT AFTER ONLY ABOUT 50,000 MILES AND MISLEAD YOU TO THINK YOU ARE OUT OF FLUID. WE WENT THROUGH THE DEALER FOR ALL SERVICE WORK AND ALL BUT ONE OIL CHANGE. RECENTLY IT BEGAN SHAKING EVEN WHEN THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THE ENGINE WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACED (COSTING $4000). THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN HAD ORIGINALLY TOLD US THAT THE ENGINE HAD GONE BAD BECAUSE WE HAD NOT CHANGED THE OIL OR HAD PUT THE WRONG OIL IN IT. THIS IS UNTRUE, WE HAVE MET THE REQUIREMENTS SET OUT BY FORD AND HAD PROOF. THEN, HE SAID THAT WE MUST HAVE GONE THROUGH HIGH WATER IN THE CAR BECAUSE THE AIR FILTER WAS YELLOWED. WE HAVE NEVER TAKEN THE CAR THROUGH HIGH WATER. WE WERE TOLD BY A DIFFERENT FORD MECHANIC THAT DUST AND POLLEN IN THE AIR CAN CAUSE THE YELLOWING. THEN THEY TOLD US THAT THE ENGINE COULD HAVE BECOME RUINED BECAUSE OF HEAVY RAIN. WE HAVE OWNED MORE THAN A DOZEN CARS (ONE HAVING OVER 180,000 ON IT) AND HAVE NEVER HAD AN ENGINE GO BAD ON US. WE HAVE OWNED 7 DIFFERENT FORD VEHICLES. WE HAVE DONE OUR PART IN TAKING CARE OF THE FORD ESCAPE, AND WE FEEL THAT IT IS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS KIND OF REPAIR SO EARLY IN ITS LIFE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE STALL. THEY CONTACTED THEIR REPAIR HOTLINE FOR SUGGESTIONS. THERE WAS APPARENTLY NO REAL ANSWER BUT IT WAS SUGGESTED TO REPLACE A VARIETY OF PARTS. MY VEHICLE HAD NO PROBLEMS UNTIL 06/25/02 WHEN IT STALLED AGAIN FOR NO REASON. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. IN EACH INSTANCE I WAS TRAVELLING AT APPROXIMATELY 45MPH ON A DOWNHILL (WITH PLENTY OF GAS IN THE TANK) AND THE VEHICLE STALLED W/OUT ANY WARNING. MY RADIO & LIGHTS CONTINUED TO WORK JUST FINE. NEEDLESS TO SAY I LOST MY POWER STEERING AND BRAKES ON EACH OCCASION. THE FIRST 2 OCCASIONS I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO MUSCLE MY CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD W/OUT INCIDENT. I PUT IT IN PARK & IT STARTED RIGHT UP. THE LAST TIME I HAD TO SHIFT IT INTO NEUTRAL ON THE FLY & RESTART THE ENGINE. LUCKILY FOR ME IT RESTARTED AS I HAD NOWHERE TO PULL OVER AS I WAS HEADED TOWARDS A TWO LANE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER WITH NO SHOULDER TO PULL ONTO. I HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY IN THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN INJURED NOR HAVE I INJURE ANYONE ELSE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS DEFECT AND A POTENTIALLY DEADLY ONE. ON 10/24/01 THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN AT THE SAME POINT IN MY COMMUTE UNDER THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES. ONCE AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WITH NO PROBLEMS AFTER PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN & TOOK IT IN. THE DEALERSHIP STATES THERE IS NO RECALL & IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY DON'T EVEN REALLY KNOW WHAT IT IS OR HOW TO FIX IT, THE HOTLINE JUST RECOMMENDED SOME THINGS TO DO HOPING IT WOULD FIX IT. SHORTLY AFTER THAT I NOTICED MY VEHICLE WAS LEAKING FLUID (11/15/01) ABOUT A WEEK AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE OIL CHANGE PLACE & THEY SAID IT WASN'T OIL BUT I HAD A PRETTY BIG LEAK OF WHAT LOOKED LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. IT ENDED UP BEING DIFFERENTIAL FLUID & THEY REPLACED THE POWER TRANSFER CASE. SO FAR MY VEHICLE HASN'T STALLED OR LEAKED ANY OTHER FLUIDS. I WAS OFFERED A TRADE IN AT THE LOSS OF $6,700.00 OR TO CALL THE 800 FORD NUMBER AND REPORT THE PROBLEM TO THEM. OVER A PERIOD OF 2 MONTHS, THE CAR LOST ALL POWER DURING THE AM DRIVE TO WORK. THIS OCCURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCASSIONS, ALMOST EXACTLY 7 MILES FROM MY HOME.
