SERVICE BRAKES

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles had brake booster shields installed under a previous campaign to prevent water from entering the brake booster and limiting braking ability. This recall is to verify that the brake booster shield installation was performed properly.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake booster shield, correcting the installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November10, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T59.

SERVICE BRAKES

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010, through September 8, 2013. The subject vehicles have a brake booster with a center shell that may corrode and allow water to get inside.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a water diverter shield to the booster after the booster has been tested to confirm it can hold an acceptable amount of vacuum pressure. If the booster inspection confirms an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, the booster will be replaced. Repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's recall campaign number is P14.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured October 11, 2011, through October 1, 2012. Under certain braking events, the Ready Alert Braking System (RAB) may result in the driver experiencing a hard brake pedal feel.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS module software, free of charge. The recall began on April 3, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number associated with this recall is P05.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A VEHICLE MARCH 2, 2021. I NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS 3 RECALLS. THE DEALER THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM DIDN'T HAVE ANY IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY TO FIX THE VEHICLE. SO I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH DODGE DEALERSHIP. MY CAR WAS AT FACILITY 2 DAYS. ONCE I PICKED UP VEHICLE THEY INFORMED ME THEY COULDN'T FIX TWO OF THE RECALLS. JASON ( SERVICE GUY) INFORMED ME THAT HE WOULD UPDATE ME. WELL A MONTH LATTER HE TELLS ME THAT THE PARTS AREN'T THERE YET . CHRYSLER HASN'T RELEASED THE PARTS YET.

THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED WITH FORCE, BUT FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A FRACTURED BACK IN TWO PLACES AND A RUPTURED LEFT BREAST IMPLANT, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL TREATMENT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO A FACILITY AND A YARD, BUT WAS NOT INVESTIGATED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY OR A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 15V115000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM), 17V435000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM), AND 17V572000 (SERVICE BRAKES, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). IF THE CAR SITS FOR A WHILE, IT HAPPENS AGAIN ON STARTUP. I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL IN A NUMBER OF 2012 DURANGOS FOR A FAULTY BRAKE BOOSTER AND THINK MAYBE IT SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO COVER THIS ONE AS WELL.

DRIVING ON INTERSTATE TAKING KIDS TO SCHOOL WHEN BRAKE LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON AND VEHICLE BRAKES WERE LIKE PUSHING A BRICK. HAD SOMEONE PICK UP THE KIDS AND TOOK TO LOCAL REPAIR SHOP I USE. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER HAD WENT OUT AND WHEN THEY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP FOR A PART WAS TOLD IT WAS ON BACK ORDER NATIONALLY WITH NO ESTIMATE OF THE TIME TO TAKE TO GET THE PART IN STOCK. BEST GUESS WAS 3-6 MONTHS. NO MENTION THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A RECALL ON THE PART (P41). ITEM REPAIRED WITH A USED OEM PART FROM A LOW-MILEAGE DURANGO SINCE NO OTHER PART WAS AVAILABLE TO USE. I STILL HAVE THE DEFECTIVE PART THAT HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH DOCUMENTATION FROM REPAIR SHOP THAT IT WAS REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED. ON INTERSTATE AGAIN TODAY WITH KIDS IN VEHICLE AND SUDDENLY HAD NO ABILITY TO GO ABOVE 20 MPH AND PULLED OVER TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. WAS TAKING IT IN FOR FUEL PUMP RELAY (R09) RECALL THIS MORNING ANYWAY. FUEL PUMP RELAY WAS REPAIRED. DEALERSHIP SAYS THE WHEELS LOCKED UP ON THEM AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER AT A COST OF $800 SINCE IT COULD BE RELATED TO PREVIOUS POWER BRAKE BOOSTER REPAIR DUE TO A USED PART REPLACEMENT. I ASKED IF THE PART WAS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AND EXPLAINED EVERYTHING AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE IT WAS DONE BY ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP AND A USED PART THAT THE RECALL DID NOT COVER THE PART AND IT WOULD BE OUT OF POCKET NOR COULD I RECOVER THE COST FROM THE PREVIOUS FIX EVEN THOUGHT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. ASKED FOR CORPORATE CONTACT AND WAS GIVEN (800)992-1997. SPOKE WITH REPRESENTATIVE AND WAS TOLD I WOULD BE CALLED BACK. LATE AFTERNOON I CALLED AGAIN SINCE I WAS STILL WAITING FOR THE CALL BACK. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENTIRE COST WOULD BE OUT OF POCKET AND THAT THE RECALL WOULD NOT COVER PART OR REIMBURSEMENT SINCE A NON-CHRYSLER MECHANIC PERFORMED THE WORK AND A USED PART WAS USED.

ON FEBRUARY 13 LEAVING THE HOUSE FOR WORK THE BRAKES WERE VERY HARD TO WORK TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. THE BRAKE BOOSTER HAD GONE OUT AGAIN. BOTH TIMES WERE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE WAS WELL BELOW FREEZING. I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE IT WAS JUST REALLY COLD OUT AND IT NEEDED TO WARM UP A BIT MORE, SO I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND IT SEEMED BETTER. DEFINITELY DIDN'T THINK THAT A TRUCK I HAVE HAD LESS THAN 3 YEARS WOULD HAVE ANY BRAKE ISSUES. WELL I WAS WRONG...WHEN GOING TO PULL OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, WHICH IS ON A MAIN ROAD, I WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKE AND THE CAR WASN'T STOPPING. QUICKLY THINKING I PUSHED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND STOPPED MYSELF AND MY YOUNGER SON FROM ROLLING INTO TRAFFIC GOING WELL OVER 40MPH. IF I HAD NOT BEEN DOING UNDER 10MPH MY SON AND MYSELF WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AND POSSIBLY DEAD. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME TO WORK ON MY VEHICLE THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THERE CUSTOMER THAT PURCHASED VEHILCES FROM THEM. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I CALLED AND TALKED TO THE GENERAL MANAGER, TIM JAMES, AND TOLD HIM THE STORY THAT HAPPNED YESTERDAY AND HE TOLD ME HE BASCILY AGREED WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER. I TOLD HIM THIS WAS A RECALL AND THAT THE RECALL LETTER HAD INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOTTOM TO REPORT THIS IF THE DEALER DID NOT REPAIR THE CAR IN A TIMLEY FASHION TO FILE A COMPLAINT. AND IF MY DURANGO IS IN NEED OF THAT PART, AT THIS RATE WILL SOMETHING HAPPEN BUT THE PART IS IN AND MY NAME COMES TO THE TOP OF THAT WAITING LIST? TOOK CAR TO AUTO SHOP NEARBY & THEY DIAGNOSED WITH FAILED BRAKE BOOSTER. HAD CAR TOWED TO CHRYSLER DEALER AS IT WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE DUE TO THE LOSS OF BRAKE POWER, IN WHICH IT REMAINED THERE FOR 3 WEEKS DUE TO BOOSTER PART "BEING ON BACK ORDER". SINCE THIS BOOSTER WAS ON BACK ORDER, I ASKED CHRYSLER IF THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON PROBLEM WITH DURANGOS & WAS TOLD NO. THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS OVER THE WARRANTY IN MILEAGE (APPROX 40,000), THE REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED, HOWEVER, THEY GAVE ME DISCOUNT. I'VE READ THE REPORTS & LETTERS ISSUED RELATING TO THIS RECALL IN WHICH THEY STATED THERE IS "NO LOSS IN BRAKING" HOWEVER, THIS WAS UNTRUE IN MY CASE. HAD I BEEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY WHEN THIS OCCURRED, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE WITH BRAKING, AS THERE WAS A DEFINITE DECREASE IN BRAKING BY APPROXIMATELY 50%. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS AT APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 5 MPH AND PULLING INTO HER CARPORT, AS SHE WAS DEPRESSING THE BRAKES THEY DID NOT ENGAGE. THE BRAKES FAILED, AND SHE CRASHED INTO HER LAWN MOWER, PUSHING IT INTO HER GARAGE DOOR. THE CONTACT DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES. THE POLICE WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED DUE TO A PENDING INVESTIGATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS LATER CONTACTED AND WAS ADVISED THAT A MANAGER WOULD BE GIVING HER CALL BACK. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,100. UPDATED 02/06/14*LJ
