Your engine suffered catastrophic failure when the oil filter was sucked into the engine due to a missing or broken stand pipe — a design flaw that GM acknowledged in a technical service bulletin but never recalled. After multiple repair attempts and efforts to get warranty coverage, your engine became completely inoperable. Fixing this issue will require engine replacement or a complete engine overhaul to address the internal damage.

Your engine's thermostat isn't opening properly, which causes the cooling fan to run constantly and your engine to overheat. This can damage your engine if not fixed soon. The thermostat will likely need to be replaced to restore normal engine temperature control.

highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jan 2026

Your air conditioning stopped working on several occasions while driving, and your check engine light came on. You also noticed the cooling fan running for a few minutes even after turning off the engine. A mechanic diagnosed a faulty engine coolant thermostat as the cause. Replacing the thermostat should resolve both the A/C issue and the cooling fan problem.

Your check engine light keeps coming on repeatedly—over 30 times—and when it does, your tow-haul mode automatically shuts off. This has happened both while towing a trailer at highway speeds and without towing anything. The dealer was contacted but didn't diagnose or repair the issue, and Chevrolet is aware of the problem. The fix will likely require diagnostic scanning to identify the engine fault code causing the warning light and addressing the underlying engine issue.

Your truck shakes noticeably when you accelerate. This has been traced to a transmission issue. Many other owners have reported the same problem, though the manufacturer has not issued a recall for this issue.

Your check engine light came on at 58,000 miles due to an EVAP (emissions) system issue. The problem was caused by dust clogging two filters in the fuel tank ventilation system located in a dusty area prone to plugging, especially on gravel roads. After cleaning these filters yourself for under $200, the check engine light cleared and hasn't returned. The owner's manual doesn't mention this filter needs regular maintenance, suggesting the filter location makes it prone to premature clogging.

While traveling down the highway at 70-75 MPH a wrist pin failure occurred. This lead to a rod punching a hole in the bottom part of the engine, obviously I lost all engine power and had to coast to the side of the road in traffic. Looking online there are wrist pin studies conducted by Geen diesel engineering company that shows obvious manufacturing defect in gm wrist pins. Upon further research I have found that this is a common failure with the 2.8 liter diesels. I contacted gm they informed me that this is not a documented problem which has set me back about $14,000. I found out that I’m not alone from what I have found it seems to affect 2016-2017 models. I’ve seen failures occurring within 7000 miles.

I HAVE A 2017 CHEVY COLORADO DIESEL WITH APPROXIMATELY 50,000 MILES WHERE THE DIESEL PARTICULATE SENSOR CONSTANTLY FAILS. I HAD IT REPLACED FOR THE 4TH TIME THE LAST WEEK IN JANUARY AND NOW ITS FAILED AGAIN. THE CODE RECEIVED IS A P1476. I WILL HAVE IT REPLACED FOR THE 5TH TIME NEXT WEEK BUT ACCORDING TO ONLINE COLORADO DIESEL FORUMS THIS IS AN ENDLESSLY FAILING PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. AS A CONSEQUENCE MANY OWNERS ARE WORKING WITH AFTER-MARKET TUNERS TO REMOVE THIS EMISSIONS CONTROL. THE MESSAGING I SEE ONLINE IS THAT THIS WILL BE AN ENDLESS EXPENSE IF I KEEP MY TRUCK BEYOND THE LIMITED EMISSIONS WARRANTY. TO-DATE THE WARRANTY HAS COVERED THE REPAIRS(~ $500 EACH) BUT THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY WILL BE EXPIRING SOON. I THINK THE NHTSA AND EPA SHOULD FORCE CHEVROLET/GM TO PROVIDE AN UNLIMITED EMISSIONS WARRANTY. SAVE THAT, GM WILL IGNORE THE PROBLEM AND MANY THOUSAND OF DIESEL TRUCKS WILL HAVE THEIR EMISSIONS CONTROLS REMOVED.
