Jun 2009

NHTSA Campaign: 09V154000

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

GM IS RECALLING 27,188 MY 2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE HYBRID, ESCALADE ESV, AND ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, TAHOE HYBRID, AND COLORADO; AND GMC YUKON, YUKON HYBRID, YUKON XL, AND CANYON VEHICLES. THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULES MAY HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH AN ADHESIVE SEPARATION OF THE ROOM TEMPERATURE VULCANIZING (RTV) SEAL BETWEEN THE SEAL AND THE HOUSING MAY ALLOW WATER TO SEEP INTO THE MODULE.

Risk: WATER IN THE MODULE COULD CAUSE A SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT, ILLUMINATION OF THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LAMP, SETTING OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES OR THE ENGINE MAY BE HARD TO START, MAY NOT START OR MAY STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 18, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

NHTSA Campaign: 10V575000

Component: CHILD SEAT

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.

Risk: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. While driving at 80 mph, your anti-theft security light came on and your truck suddenly lost engine power and coasted to a stop on the roadside. After waiting 20 minutes, the anti-theft system reset and the vehicle restarted normally, but the cause was never identified. The dealer and manufacturer were notified but offered no help. This problem may involve the anti-theft security system interfering with engine operation, and could require diagnostic testing and possible replacement of the security control module or related electrical components.

Your truck's entire electrical system shut down while you were driving at 50 mph on a highway, and it happened two more times while parked when trying to start it. You hear a clicking sound coming from behind the left side of the dashboard. The issue likely involves the battery, alternator, or electrical connections, and may require diagnostic testing and replacement of faulty components.

Your truck won't start about 3 times a week and requires jump-starting each time. You've already replaced the battery, but the problem continues. This unpredictable starting issue could leave you stranded in urgent situations. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the charging system, starter motor, or electrical connections to identify what's preventing the battery from charging or the engine from turning over.

Your truck's anti-theft system occasionally activates incorrectly, thinking the vehicle is being carjacked and preventing it from starting for about 10 minutes. This can leave you stranded, and the truck may restart on its own or require a tow to the repair shop. Replacing the PassLock anti-theft module may temporarily fix the problem, but the issue often returns since the replacement module has the same defect. A repair shop will need to diagnose and replace the PassLock anti-theft module.

Fuel/propulsion System4 issues
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2019

Your truck intermittently loses power when you press the gas pedal, causing bucking and stalling, then suddenly accelerates normally again—creating dangerous driving conditions. The problem happens in damp or rainy weather and appears to be related to the fuel system control module. Even though the fuel system control module and throttle body have both been replaced under recall, the problem persists, and GM has been unable to fix it after multiple repair attempts.

NHTSA #: 11288200
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2019

Your fuel pump module's fuel line developed corrosion and failed, causing fuel to leak significantly from your tank. This creates a serious fire hazard and allows toxic fuel fumes to enter the cabin of your vehicle. The manufacturer has not issued a recall for this issue.

NHTSA #: 11288206
criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2019

Your gas pedal has stuck in the fully open position on three separate occasions while driving on public roads, causing your truck to accelerate uncontrollably. You've been able to regain control each time, but this is a serious safety concern that you've noticed discussed frequently in online forums for this model. The issue likely involves the accelerator pedal assembly or throttle linkage and may require inspection or replacement of these components.

Your fuel system control module had water inside it, which caused your check engine light to come on and prevented your vehicle from starting. You had the module replaced, but your vehicle wasn't covered under the recall even though your symptoms match exactly what the recall describes.

Filed: Nov 2023

Your truck's subframe and driver's side leaf spring have developed severe rust, which was discovered during a service visit at 88,000 miles. The mechanic notified you of the issue, but it wasn't repaired. While your truck doesn't have a recall for this problem, severe rust on structural components can compromise the vehicle's integrity and safety over time. Addressing this will likely require professional removal and replacement of the rusted subframe and leaf spring components.

Your sun visor keeps falling down while you're driving, which blocks your view of the road. Additionally, you're experiencing loud wind noise coming into the cabin because the frame isn't properly aligned, making it hard to hear sirens or horns from other vehicles. Getting the frame realigned and the visor mechanism inspected and repaired should resolve both issues.

Filed: Nov 2018

Your truck sometimes won't start, and you have to wait about 10 minutes before it will turn on again. When this happens, all the lights work fine and you see the lock symbol flashing on the dashboard, but the battery isn't dead and there's nothing you can do to make it start sooner. The issue appears to be with your vehicle's security system (either the Passlock anti-theft system or the ignition switch). A technician will need to diagnose whether the problem is in the security module, ignition switch, or related wiring.

Your vehicle wouldn't start for about 10 minutes while parked. The issue appears to be related to the security system or passcode not recognizing your key properly. This prevented the engine from cranking until it eventually cleared. The fix might involve reprogramming your key, checking the security module, or replacing the key battery or fob.

FireFiled: Jul 2019

The rubber weather strip on the back of your hood detached due to a weak retention clip design and fell onto the hot exhaust manifold, catching fire. The fire spread quickly up the weather strip, melting nearby plastic PCV hoses and damaging the fuel line hose. You were able to smell the smoke, open the hood, and extinguish the fire with a portable extinguisher before it reached the pressurized fuel line. This happened on a well-maintained, unmodified vehicle. The repair will likely involve replacing the hood weather strip, retention clips, any damaged hoses, and inspecting the fuel system for damage.

Your vehicle failed state inspection due to significant rust and corrosion on the main suspension components underneath your truck. The inspector said the corrosion was severe enough that the vehicle couldn't be safely driven. This happened at around 46,000 miles. Fixing this will likely require professional undercarriage cleaning, rust treatment, and replacement of severely corroded suspension parts.

Your brake light switch has failed or isn't working properly, and there's a technical service bulletin (TSB 09V310000) that addresses this issue. However, your dealer refused to fix it, claiming the recall had expired and that you don't live in Louisiana or Georgia where the recall applied. The fix typically involves replacing the brake light switch.
