ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CRANKCASE (PCV)
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.
Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

MY VEHICLE HAS THE COMMONLY AND POPULARLY KNOWN WEEP HOLE COOLANT LEAK. APPARENTLY, BMW HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM IN PREVIOUS YEAR MODEL CARS, DATING BACK TO 2002. THEY HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS WAS A FLAW IN THEIR DESIGN. HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALLS ON THE REPAIR OF THIS ISSUE, WHICH COSTS OWNERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR LABOR ALONE FOR A RATHER 'INEXPENSIVE' PART. IT WOULD ONLY BE FAIR FOR BMW TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS COMMONLY KNOWN ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO AFFECT HUNDREDS OF OWNERS OF BMWS WITH THE SAME ENGINES. THE COOLANT LEAKS ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THROUGH A RANDOM HOLE AROUND THE ENGINE. IT IS A RATHER COSTLY FIX DUE TO SEVERAL COMPONENTS NEEDING TO BE REMOVED BEFORE ONE CAN GET TO THE BROKEN PART TO BE REPLACED. IT IS UNFAIR FOR CURRENT OWNERS TO HAVE TO PAY SIGNIFICANTLY FOR A CAR THAT HAS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS CURRENT UNFORTUNATE DISCOVERY. MY CAR SUDDENLY LEAKED ALL THE COOLANT OUT OF THE CAR AND INTO THE ROAD AND MY DRIVEWAY. THANKFULLY I WAS ALMOST HOME WHEN IT BROKE DOWN. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE FREEWAY OR ON THE STREET AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A RISK OF GETTING HIT BY OTHER CARS IF MY CAR JUST SUDDENLY STALLED. AND I WAS DRIVING WITH BABY ON BOARD! I SUGGEST THIS BE INVESTIGATED, AS IT'S AN ISSUE THAT'S APPARENTLY VERY COMMON IN THE N62 ENGINES.
THE 2008 - 2014 BMW X5 ENGINE TROUBLES ARE THE SAME ISSUES MY 2007 ENGINE ARE HAVING, YET THERE IS NOT A RECALL FOR THE 2007. THERE SHOULD BE SINCE I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME TYPE OF ISSUES.
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THIS RECALL, I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 1.5 YEARS AND THIS IS THE THIRD RECALL! MY CURRENT MAIN CONCERN IS THERE IS A BURNING GAS LIKE OIL ODOR IN MY CAR. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE SAYING REMEDY IS UNAVAILABLE! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE MY LIFE AND MY CHILDREN LIFE IS IN DANGER. BMW SHOULD PROVIDE AN IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION!! WHEN I START THE CAR I SMELL BURNING SMELL AND SOMETIMES SEE SMOKE COME FROM HOOD OF CAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO BMW 2 MONTHS AGO FOR SERVICE AND WAS TOLD ALL WAS WELL WITH MY CAR. TWO OTHER RECALLS WERE CORRECTED HOWEVER, I STILL HAVE THE SAME GAS ODOR WHICH WAS DUE TO ANOTHER RECALL DEALING WITH THE FUEL TANK. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD DRIVING THIS CAR, AND ITS AN INSULT FOR BMW TO SEND A LETTER STATING THE ISSUE BUT STATE THERE IS NO REMEDY WHEN THE RECALL CONSEQUENCES CAN CAUSE A FIRE! AND YOU TELLING ME THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE REMEDY!! PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, I WILL ALSO BE CONTACTING BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS MATTER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW X5. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE WOULD SUDDENLY SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP WAS FAULTY. THE WATER PUMP WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V364000 (AIR BAGS) IN MAY OF 2016. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR THE RECALL REMEDY WERE STILL NOT AVAILABLE AND NO ESTIMATED TIME FOR RECEIVING THE PARTS COULD BE PROVIDED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW X5. UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAYED A LOW COOLANT ERROR MESSAGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE COOLANT RESERVOIR WAS REPLENISHED AND THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS NO LONGER DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A COOLANT LEAK AND THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,000.
MY X5 BMW 2007 6 CYLINDER 3.0 WITH 74,605 MAKES A TICKING NOISE IN THE ENGINE WHEN IN COLD I RECENTLY PURCHASED IT ON MARCH 9,2007 AT THE AUTO WEST BMW OF FREMONT.I HAVE TAKEN IT A COUPLE OF TIMES TO THE DEALER FOR THAT SAME REASON AND THE DEALER CLAIMS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ONLINE AND SEEN THAT THERE IS OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. NOW EVERY MORNING I START THE CAR IT MAKES THE SAME NOISE AFTER I RUN IT FOR A COUPLE MILES IT STOPS BUT THE DEALER SAYS THAT IS NORMAL AND I HAVE ONLY RAN IT MAX 3,000 MILES SINCE I BOUGHT IT AND I ALSO BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR IT BUT THEY SAY NOTHING IS WRONG THAT IS NORMAL FOR IT TO MAKE THAT NOISE . *TR
THE ELECTRIC WATER PUMP HAS CONSTANTLY FAILED EVEN AFTER REPLACING IT AND CAUSED ALSO DAMAGE TO FUSE BOX AND THERMOSTAT MOST OF THE TIME. BMW MUST BE FORCED TO RECALL THE 2007 X5 3.0I AND GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED ONCE AND FOR ALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW X5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE OVERHEAT WARNING MESSAGE ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST ONTO THE ROAD SHOULDER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC AND LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE ELECTRONIC WATER PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 107,000. UPDATED 3/5/13 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE WATER PUMP FAILED TWICE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE NEVER RAN HOT OR LEAKED ANY COOLANT.
BMW RECALLED X5 FROM 2008-2011 FOR WATER PUMP FAILURE. MY X5 IS 2007 AND IT IS IDENTICAL MODEL AS 2008-2011 BMW X5. SAME DESIGN AND SAME WATER PUMP PART. HOWEVER BMW MANUFACTURER SAID IT WILL NOT BE COVERED BY RECALL BECAUSE IT IS NOT 2008-2011 MODEL. THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE THAT THEY DO NOT RECALL 2007 X5 EVEN IF IT IS IDENTICAL CAR TO 2008-2011 BMW X5. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW X5. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE WATER PUMP HAD FAILED. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED WHO STATED THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.
IN MAY 2007, I PURCHASED A NEW BMW 2007 X5 4.8 VEHICLE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE EXPERIENCED "HIGH BATTERY DRAINAGE" WARNINGS AT LEAST 12 TIMES. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE COMPUTER DOESN'T SHOW A HISTORY OF THIS MESSAGE AND IT DOES NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY. THE CAR ENGINE ALSO FAILS TO START AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS- THE LIGHTS, RADIO AND AIR TURN ON, BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, THE ENGINE STARTS. THIS HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST 12 TIMES SINCE 11/2007 AS WELL- BUT INDEPENDENTLY OF THE "HIGH BATTERY DRAINAGE" WARNING. THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE STARTING WHEN I TAKE THE CAR IN. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) STAYS LOCKED IN ONE GEAR AND THE ENGINE REVS UP WHILE DRIVING, FAILING TO AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO THE NEXT GEAR UNLESS THE DRIVER RELEASES THE GAS PEDAL OR PUSHES THE GAS PEDDLE TO "THROW IT" INTO THE NEXT GEAR. IT WOULD ALSO LURCH ON INCLINES, BUT STOPPED EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM (PERHAPS COINCIDENTALLY) WHEN I REMOVED MY CELLPHONE FROM THE CAR'S BLUETOOTH/HANDS-FREE SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN SAID THAT IT COULD NOT DETECT ANY PROBLEMS. BMW USA IS NO HELP EITHER, SINCE THEY RELY ON THE DEALERSHIPS TO REPORT ISSUES TO THEM. IF THE LOCAL DEALERS AREN'T REPORTING THE ISSUES THAT OWNERS EXPERIENCE SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIND AN ANSWER, THEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE OWNERS AND THEIR PASSENGERS DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES. I BELIEVE A PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM AND PERHAPS SOMETHING ELSE. I HAVE SEEN COMPLAINTS BY OTHER 2007 X5 OWNERS FOR THE SAME ISSUES ON WEBSITES SUCH AS EDMUNDS.COM AND OWNERS LOCALLY WHERE I LIVE.
