Your fuel tank developed a hole on top, which triggered a warning light on your dashboard. The dealer told you the tank needs to be replaced and that BMW is aware this is a known issue with this model year. Even though BMW has offered extended warranty coverage for similar problems on other vehicles, your repair wasn't covered. The repair will likely involve draining and removing your fuel tank, then installing a new one.

The contact owns a 2013 BMW 328i. The contact stated while parking the vehicle, a parking lot attendant advised the contact that the vehicle could not be parked in the lot because fuel was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed fuel injection system. The contact was informed that the fuel injection system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer advised the contact not to drive the vehicle because the vehicle was unsafe to drive due to the significant fuel leak that could cause a fire. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 113,439.
I filled tank up with gas and developed a gas leak with strong gas odor and gas dripping onto the roadway. My safety was put at risk because gasoline was dripping past my hot exhaust piping which has the potential to catch on fire. My independent service center has confirmed this issue. The manufacturer has denied that their is a systemic failure that could result in a gasoline fire. There were no warning lamps or messages indicating a problem.
SMELLING FUEL WHEN I FILL MY TANK AND ALSO NOTICED FUEL ON THE GROUND IF PARKED FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. TOOK MY CAR IN AND THEY STATED THE FUEL TANK HAS A HAIRLINE CRACK AND BMW HAS SINCE REINFORCED THE PART. SEEMS LIKE THEY KNOW IT IS PRONE TO CRACKING AND HAVE MADE THE FIX BUT NOT ISSUED A RECALL
WHITE SMOKE COME OUT FROM TAILPIPE AFTER THE COLD STARTS. AFTER RESEARCH, I FOUND IT IS WILL KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS YEAR'S MODEL. IT IS DEFECTED TURBOCHARGE OIL SUPPLY LINE.THEY HAVE TO DO EMISSION RECALL
UPON A COMPLETE REFILL OF THE VEHICLE WITH FUEL, RAW GASOLINE WAS FOUND LEAKING DOWN THE TANK AND PUDDLING UNDER THE CAR. DIAGNOSTIC INSPECTION UPON LOWERING THE FUEL TANK FOUND A DEFECTIVE "DUMMY PORT" SEAL AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. THIS PORT WAS USED IN EARLY MODELS FOR EMISSION CONTROL SENSING. THE CAP OVER THE SEAL WAS NOT PROPERLY SEALED ALLOWING FUEL TO SPILL OUT THE TOP OF THE TANK. WHEN IN MOTION THIS FUEL BLOWS ONTO THE HOT MUFFLER AND POSES A POTENTIAL FOR CATASTROPHIC FIRE
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE CAUSED CAR TO CEASE OPERATING. CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY WHILE IN MOTION. I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING STRUCTURE AT THE TIME. ULTIMATELY, THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR.
TRAVELING AT 65MPH ON A STATE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED AN ABRUPT LOSS OF POWER, DECELERATED TO 25MPH, AND NARROWLY AVOIDED REAR-END COLLISION. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSIS WAS A DEFECTIVE HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP.

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE JERKED AT TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 44,000.
